HIGH-TECH: Lithium Ion Battery Capability Developing in India

Lithium ion battery capability is finally being developed in India to bring costs down and
make such batteries cost effective for mass production of electric vehicles (EVs). This was revealed today by Nitin Gadkari, Union minister for Road Transport and Highways at the inauguration of the first Electric Vehicle Expo 2015 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
Gadkari recounted how, on a visit to London, he had travelled in an Ashok Leyland-owned Optare electric bus around the city and on enquiring was told that the lithium ion battery powering the bus cost Rs 55 lakh. On returning to India, he asked ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), which is developing lithium ion batteries for rockets and satellites, to develop one for four-wheelers, e-rickshaws and buses.
Six months later, the lithium ion battery was patented after being tested by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The development cost is estimated at Rs 5-6 lakh.
Three electric buses have been fitted with these batteries.
The first of the batteries was fitted in the electric bus flagged off by the Prime Minister at the Parliament for transporting members on December 21 (pictured l above). Two more electric buses have been developed, one for the Supreme Court and the other for the Road
Transport and Highways department.
The minister said he has requested the prime minister to allow these lithium ion batteries to be manufactured by the small scale sector in the country.
Gadkari also spoke about briefing vehicle manufacturers about developing flex fuel technology cars, similar to those being used invBrazil, to reduce pollution and to enable a more cost-effective transportation system in the country.
He has also asked Chinese companies participating in the EV Expo 2015 (December 25-27 in Delhi) to ink joint ventures with Indian
firms to develop e-rickshaws and e-carts as well as other EVs while adhering to standards and quality.
Smart Electric Bus uses KPIT Tech
The smart electric bus, which was flagged off by prime minister Narendra Modi on December 21, employs indigenous technology developed by the India-headquartered global technology company, KPIT. Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) has
partnered for this project to validate and ensure that the electric bus technology is safe, reliable, and well suited for Indian road conditions. KPIT says the smart electric bus enables clean mobility and is aligned with the Indian
government’s initiatives of Make in India, Smart
Cities and Swachh Bharat.
This full electric system for buses can be deployed to create new intelligent electric
buses, as well as convert existing conventional
fuel buses. It is a versatile system and a variety of existing bus types can be converted to electric buses. KPIT has over 20 global patents for this technology.

BHEL, Libcoin to build India's first lithium-ion battery plant: Govt

State-run BHEL and Libcoin are in talks to form a consortium to initially build a 1GWh lithium-ion battery plant in India, the government said on Friday. The plant's capacity will be scaled up to 30GWh in due course. "BHEL will be sending a team of senior officers for study of the facilities, R&D infrastructure and other techno-commercial issues soon. Based upon the evaluation and recommendations of the team, further process towards formation of joint venture will be carried forward," the heavy industries and public enterprises ministry said in a statement. It said the project will bring energy independence by replacing oil imports with abundant renewable. "This project also includes 'Made by India, for India', with focus on core-cost components manufactured domestically. It will also create integrated manufacturing ecosystem resulting in self-reliance and lower cost," the statement issued by the Heavy Industries Ministry said. A holistic view of the supply chain in combination with cutting edge digital technologies to replace high capex and high opex processes will be the highlight of the project. Various Indian cities, including Delhi, have been struggling to cut down their pollution level for the last several years and electric transportation is considered as one of the viable approaches to cut down emission. The number of electric cars in the world already hit million-mark last year and the International Energy Agency has projected almost 140 million electric cars globally by 2030, if countries meet Paris climate accord targets, in which India has already committed to actively participate.

India will always continue to do catching up business. We're nearing end of lithium ion batteries era and now we start manufacturing of lithium ion battery... Great thinking from great minds...

World will move to cheaper better Graphene batteries by 2022-24 again led by Panasonic same company which made lithium ion battery.... Continue importing batteries.

Bio Methanol and diesel, Solar/ wind power, Lithium Iron battery and Zero budget farming has the potential to turn Indian future. If this is done, we shall no longer be a trade deficit state. Rupee will strengthen, poverty shall be reduced to negligible, living standard will go up substantially. People will have organic food to for consumption in huge amount. Socio-economic indicators will improve.

Developing batteries and other things at laboratory levels is one thing and commercially manufacturing it on mass scale viabally is a completely different game. We have developed microprocessor and even had technology for lithium ion batteries with ISRO but still we were not able to manufacture it....

Do we have any commercial foundary to manufacture semi conductors. We don't even manufacture alkaline and recrargeable AA AAA pencil batteries, even those are imported.

What will happen is many of the older lithium ion battery plants will be sold by multinational companies to indian companies which will manufacture these batteries here and multinationals will move to graphene batteries. Our industrialists don't have vision to look into future and invest on r&d to come up with path breaking innovative solutions....:crying::crying::frusty:

We at least have developed something in meantime and not decades later.

Government has been pushing for electronics production. If not a lot, at least some substance will come to India. Not to forget, India's going to have largest skilled labour soon.
Its going to remain only capable industrialized place with cheap labour.

Another better study is being done by this start up .

Mumbai-based Gegadyne Energy is developing a battery that can last 50 times longer than lithium-ion batteries

So innovation and studies are already there. But for mass production we need demand. Without demand no one is going to step in the field of manufacturing. India and Indians have yet to accept the concept of hybrid vehicles which could be the biggest consumer of this tech. Sooner we start accepting electric vehicles, better it is for us. But on other hand, would fuel mafia let us do this so easily?

This is a great development but India does not have huge lithium reserves(like China) we still may have to import it.

Sometimes I wonder & regret, Pak & Afghan got most fertile and resourceful land of India.
Afghanistan has one of largest reserves of lithium and metalloids in world. So, is Pakistan with many precious metals. If India was never divided, our fate would've been quite different.:(

Those countries wouldn't have been struggling for everything despite having everything. So, would have been trying to earn from little profit margins, importing such things & seeking other ways of connectivity.
