INDIGENOUS ATGM HELINA SUCCESSFULLY FLIGHT TESTED AGAIN FOR ITS FULL RANGE

Jaisalmer: The upgraded air version of the Nag missile which is a third generation ‘fire-and-forget’ anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) has been successfully tested from indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) again on Wednesday in the Pokhran firing range. The weapon system has been tested for its full range and series of its trials was done on Sunday. Prior to this the test was to be done on July 1 which was dropped on last moment due to some technical issue in the user firing trial in missile.

On Wednesday ‘HELINA’ weapon system was released smoothly from the launch platform and had tracked the target all through its course and hit the target with high precision. All the parameters were monitored by the telemetry stations, tracking systems and the helicopters. Senior officers of DRDO, Indian Army and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) were present for trial. The HELINA Missile trials were done on Sunday and again on Wednesday.

The Missile is guided by an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) operating in the Lock on Before Launch mode. It is one of the most advanced anti-tank weapons in the world.

Source said the missiles were tested for its IIR with far greater resolution than what has been tested earlier as per the demand of the users. A higher version seeker, with a much higher focal plane array as compared to the original plan has been tested.

Source said Seekers evaluation trials are carried out for the ATGM in hot desert conditions of Rajasthan against both moving and static targets for different ranges till seven kilometres to evaluate performance of an improved version of IIR for engaging and striking the target.

It is known that IIRs for ‘HELINA’ have been developed indigenously at Hyderabad based research centre Imarat of DRDO and the missile is handled by the missile handling unit of HAL.

There're several misleading articles on this Helina test, where they say that the missile was tested to its 'maximum range'. I read in an article (can't remember where at the top of my head), that it's actually the maximum range for LOBL - which is 5 kms! The full range of 8 kms will be tested shortly - this will be in LOAL mode.

That's quite typical for most media articles regarding defense in India. Most of the so-called journalists are hacks and the rest are mouthpieces for vested interests. It doesn't help that the official side is quite tight lipped while PSU's like to exaggerate and boast in press releases. I've learned to take all indian defense media reports with a very generous pinch of salt

The LOBL range of HELINA is 8 Km.

Vara Prasad, project director for HeliNa, said that out of the three test-fires, HeliNas hit the target twice.

"The observations are yet to be evaluated," said Prasad, adding that these development trials would pave the way for the 'deliverable stage' in the near future. These missiles were fired from HAL Rudra, also known as ALH WSI, the armed version of HAL Dhruv.

Officials said the trials were conducted for a range of seven kilometres this time.
The HeliNa has an extended strike range of about eight kilometres," said an official.

Are you sure about this? I thought the whole idea of adding data-link/LOAL was in order to extend the range from 4kms to 8 kms.
NAG or HELINA is a third generation ATGM. It means that it is a Fire and Forget system.

BTW.. NAG had already displayed the capability of on flight target updation.

HAHA. Don't forget that fire-and-don't-forget capability (LOAL) was added on AFTER the fire-and-forget (LOBL) capability was achieved!!

They could. But bottom line is, HELINA's range is 8 km in LOBL mode.

Not sure if the new seeker helps in that regard, but with earlier seeker (low resolution) it wasn't LOBL at 8kms - and hence the data-link & LOAL.

Point to note is that on the first day of the recent Helina trials, they said it was tested to 'full range' even though it was only tested for 5kms! Apparently they were talking about the seeker range. The 8kms range test was probably done few days after.
