The problem is it came too late.

With HTT we can replace PT-7, but we can't replace Hawk with Sitara.

Moreover, HaL has put enough Hawk-i and I don't see a justification for Sitara.

The first flight is going to happen by the end of the year, let's give 2-3 yrs for testing.

Short answer is, Sitara's fate was doomed when it failed spin tests... No matter how hard we try, It is not good enough to replace Hawk nor compete Hawk-i.
Sitara is a replacement for Kirans as IJT. The replacement for Hawk can be HJT39, if Sitara becomes successful.

Let me get this straight... IAF has a prop trainer, an IJT, an AJT and trainer aircraft embedded in each squadron for four layers of training aircraft?

If the aerodynamic and spin issues are sorted out and sitara is equipped with HTFE 25, this plane will be able to more than satisfy the need of IAF trainer. It will have limited combat capability as well. Fingers crossed for sitara. I believe that sitara failed because of its name. If had some sanskrit name , it would have succeed. It should have a sanskrit name like Rohini, Shikra tarika, Magha, Swati etc. Urdu name f**ked up the project.

Please remember htt40 hjt36 sport and Tejas combined can give hal a turnover of 15000 crore per year. Then we have Dhruv, and its variants, overhaul of various models. This is actually very good for HAL.

All we need from HAL is move from monopoly to a real efficient innovative company which can export 40% of its production.

They don't. IAF already said that they are no longer interested in IJT category of trainers. The Sitara program has been abandoned by IAF, but continues to be pursued by HAL as a pet project, hopeful for export orders possibly.

There will be BTT -- Combination of PC-7 and HTT-40 likely
AJT -- Hawk and future versions are possible for initial jet-training of pilots
LIFT -- HAL SPORT (if adopted) will enable supersonic envelope and ability to train pilots in full operation of AESA radars, and full spectrum of weapon-release, prior to them being inducted into squadrons and fly actual fighters

Once we get rid of our Alpha Jets the only thing we will have are PC-21s. The simulation equipment built into them and the nature of the performance allows one aircraft to do the job of prop trainer, IJT and AJT. Of course there are conversion squadrons for each type of aircraft but even the Rafale conversion squadron services both the ALA and MN Rafales.

@Gessler
Other than HAL, no one in the world really manufacturers such thing as an IJT. Owing to the fact no one uses the BTT-IJT-AJT-OCT training regimen that we do.

Either they use BTT-AJT-OCT, or BTT-AJT-LIFT-OCT.

So I don't know who Vijainder thinks IAF wanted to import foreign IJTs from.

Spin test in July may revive intermediate jet trainer plan

NEW DELHI: The indigenous programme to develop an intermediate jet trainer (IJT) could get back on track with a crucial ‘spin recovery’ test in July, with developer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) confident that modifications carried out on the test aircraft would prove successful.

HAL chairman R Madhavan has told ET that a spin recovery parachute is being integrated onboard the test aircraft this month, following which it would be put through a series of tests to prove that it meets service requirements.

The air force is in dire need of an IJT as ‘Kiran Mk II’ fleet is being phased out, putting a strain on its pilot training programme. The IJT ‘Sitara’ project has been in the works since 1999 but had hit a roadblock in 2014 after it failed the safety tests.

After facing difficulties in the Spin Test —in which the plane is stalled midair and recovered as part of the training process — a foreign consultant was hired by HAL and structural changes have been carried out. “We are getting the recovery parachute this month and once we integrate it, we can restart the testing along with all the modifications that BAR (Bihrle Applied Research) has given. We will start the first spin tests by July and once that happens, we will be back in the game,” Madhavan said.

The indigenous aircraft has gone through a significant modification, including an increase in the length of the rear fuselage and a redesigned rudder placement. A timeline for final development would be available only after the spin tests are completed.

“We have seen the mathematical models and in this case we are quite confident that the modifications will work and we can meet the required tests,” the HAL chairman said. The spin recovery parachute being integrated is a fail safe mechanism.

HAL is also working on changes in the Russian origin engine of the IJT. “The modifications have been done and we expect the life to be increased from just about 100 hours right now,” Madhavan said.

If the IJT clears tests, the deliveries can be carried out at an accelerated pace, given HAL already has 16 serial production aircraft ready that can be quickly modified. The air force has a requirement of 83 IJTs and the number could cross a hundred if the needs of the Navy are also factored in.
