Nothing wrong with it, his voters are very happy with the move.

This secularism coolaid stuff is only for when they don't have the numbers.
Nah, this guy is bringing Turkey back to 7th century’s - undoing all the modernization of Ataturk.

Erdogan is also not popular in Istanbul, his core voters come from the hither land, where traditional Islam is much in play.

Hope he rots soon.

There are 2.2 billion Christians and 1.7 billion Muslims on this planet right now. Hagia Sophia is a symbol of Orthodox Christianity which has a membership of around 250 million. The main orthodox country is Russia. Many Russians visit Turkey to see Orthodox sites.

Converting Hagia Sophia to mosque is a childish decision which will cost Turkey goodwill of Orthodox people.

Islamist have never care for other “false” religions besides their own.

If it’s for Islam - it is justifiable.

And Pakistan/Afghanistan/Bangladesh is sitting on Buddhist/Hindu/Sikh land.

Have any of them ever cared?

This move has already got huge support among his Islamist voters.
Any such move is long term negative. For Pakistan also.
Religion still plays a significant role in human lives. Respecting other religions is important.

If Pakistan was not so blinded by fanaticism, it would have won Kashmir long back. The only thing that helps India is Pakistan's Muslim fanaticism.

Putin will use this to fuel and create Anti-Turkic sentiments in Russia which will help him wage war against Turks both in Libya and Syria. This event will help Putin and many other nationalist leaders in the orthodox Christian world consolidate there support base against the new Turkic Islamic enemy. Majority of Putin ‘s supporters are Conservative and Nationalist orthodox Russians. They see russia as the Third Rome. So turkey is trying to challenge Russia ‘s dominance by changing the status of the Haga Sofia church. Erdogan is going to get a lot more than what he asked for lol 😂. This is going to be great 👍

Islam is not modern in hinter land or in Istambul. There might be differences among the practitioners themselves, but never wrt to "others" (read kafirs).

Except that Islam was on its death bed in Istanbul before caliph Erdogan showed up.

Things I have seen during the 90s.
- Turks drinking beer in mosque
- mosque empty and is seen as an old folks centre
- barely saw a hijabi around back then
- most Turks would tell religious Muslims to go back to Arab (Yallah Arabia)

Islam is never modern, but Turks were a shining example in the Muslim world. But then again, they were shining because they were barely Islamic.
