The birth day of Guru Nanak Dev Ji will be celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety tomorrow. A series of functions are being organised in the Gurudwaras across the national capital to mark the occasion. Free langars are also being organised on the birthday of the founder of Sikhism. The President Mrs Pratibha Patil,the Vice-President Mohd Hamid Ansari and the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh have greeted the people on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti.
In her message, the President said that Guru Nanak Devji's message of universal harmony, unity and human concord is ever relevant and eternal. Let us on this day resolve to follow the path laid down by him and work to strengthen the bonds of unity and mutual goodwill among people.
The Vice-President, while conveying his good wishes on Guruparv, described Guru Nanak as an apostle of universal love, piety and spiritual faith.
Dr Singh in a message said the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, of peace and unity are very relevant in today’s world.

President, PM greet nation on Guru Nanak Jayanti​

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI) President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today greeted the nation on the eve of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

In her message, President Patil said, "On the auspicious occasion of the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens."

Stating that Guru Nanak's message of universal harmony, unity and human concord is ever relevant and eternal, Patil said, "Let us on this day resolve to follow the path laid down by him and work to strengthen the bonds of unity and mutual goodwill among people."

The Prime Minister, in his message, hailed the teachings of Guru Nanak of peace and unity saying they are relevant in today's world.

"A society without discrimination and distinction -- the vision of Guru Nanak -- is the vision towards which we should strive," Singh said.

Guru Nanak had many beliefs which were not popular at the time but are now widespread.


Equality of Humans during the time of Nanak caste based discrimination was deep rooted in Indian society.Nanak preached against discrimination and prejudices due to race,caste,status, etc.He said:"See the brotherhood of all mankind as the highest order of Yogis; conquer your own mind, and conquer the world." (Page 6)[23]; also"There is one awareness among all created beings."(Page 24)[24] and finally"One who recognizes the One Lord among all beings does not talk of ego. ||4||" (page 432)[25].He urges his followers to "conquer" their minds to these evil practises.All human beings had the light of the Lord and were the same–only by subduing one's pride and ego could one see this light in all.

Equality of Women: In about 1499 Indian society offered little status or respect to women,Nanak Dev sought to elevate the position of women by spreading this message:"From woman, man is born;within woman,man is conceived;to woman he is engaged and married.Woman becomes his friend;through woman the future generations come.When his woman dies,he seeks another woman;to woman he is bound.So why call her bad?From her,kings are born.From woman,woman is born; without woman,there would be no one at all. O Nanak,only the True Lord is without a woman." (Page 473)[26]. In so doing he promoted the equality of women in the 15th century. Nanak Dev also condemned the ritual of Sati.

Universal message for all PeopleThe followers of Nanak were from all faiths and he addressed all without discrimination.To the Muslim he said:"And when,O Nanak,he is merciful to all beings,only then shall he be called a Muslim.||1||" (page 141"[27];to the Hindu,he said"O Nanak,without the True Name,of what use is the frontal mark of the Hindus or their sacred thread? ||1||" (page 467)[28];and to all he preached:"To take what rightfully belongs to another is like a Muslim eating pork or a Hindu eating beef."(Page 141)[29]

Celebrating with the spirit of service and devotion

KANPUR: Thousands of people -- irrespective of caste and religion -- converged in various Gurudwaras and Motijheel Ground to celebrate the 542nd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, the first guru and founder of Sikhism.

Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated as `Prakashotsav' falls on Kartik Purnima. Various Gurudwaras of the city, including those in Gumti, Fazal Ganj, Jarib Chowki and Latouche Road, had organised `langar' for the people. The Gurudwaras were also tastefully decorated with glittering lights and flowers.

Even non-Sikh devotees turned up in large numbers to participate in the celebrations.

The day started with `Prabhat Pheri' (early morning procession) which began from the Gurdwaras and moved to other localities. The procession included singing of hymns and the palki (palanquin) of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (sacred book of the Sikhs).

This was followed by people gathering in the afternoon for the langar (mass meal). Manjeet Singh, who had organised the `langar' at Motijheel said, "Till 3.00 in the afternoon, `shabad kirtan' was held while the meal continued till 4.00pm. The prasad is offered to the people irrespective of their religion. The idea behind the free communal lunch is that people should be offered food in the spirit of seva (service) and simran (devotion)." For example, Jaswinder Kaur, who belongs to an elite family, made chappatis for the `langar' as a gesture of community service.

Discussing the relevance of the festival, Satnam Singh, a devotee at Motijheel Ground said, "Guru Nanak Dev ji was a reformer and advocated harmonious relations between Hindus and Muslims. The `Prakashotsava' is celebrated to mark his birth anniversary. Our community welcomes people of other faiths also in the spirit of unity.''

Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated in Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, Nov 2 (PTI) The 540th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev was celebrated today with religious and traditional fervour across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

A large number of devotees thronged Gurdwaras, which were beautifully decorated on the occasion, to pay obeisance.

The devotees took Langar (community kitchen) organised on the occasion and listen to Shabad Kirtans besides taking a dip in sarovars (tanks) of the shrines.

Many people reached Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple which was illuminated for the festival.

Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh guru was born at Nankana Sahab near Lahore in Pakistan in 1469.

A large number of Sikhs from Punjab and other places have gone to the neighbouring country to join the celebrations at Nankana Sahab.
