The US has cleared the sale of 22 unmanned Guardian drones to India, governmental sources said today, a deal being termed as a “game changaer” ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit here for his maiden meeting with President Donald Trump. The deal, estimated to be worth USD two to three billion, has been approved by the State Department, the sources said. The decision has been communicated to the Indian government and the manufacturer by the State Department yesterday, according to the informed governmental sources. “This is the first very significant sign of the Trump administration being more result oriented in its relationship with India compared to Obama administration,” a source told PTI.

The designation of India being a “major defence partner” was decided by the previous Obama Administration, and formally approved by the Congress. The State Department and the White House did not immediately respond to the questions in this regard. An official announcement is expected soon. Modi’s first meeting with Trump has been scheduled to take place at the White House on June 26. The Indian Navy had made the request for this intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform last year.

But we aren't leasing them so why can't we open one of them to observe what's inside.
Is there some law that prohibit us?

Seems over priced. Seems Trump is a good businessman. Selling 1 million$ (who knows even lesser cost) worth drones for 100million $ a piece. And that too which cannot fire a single bullet. I hope Modi would have discussed with DRDO before taking decision. I can foresee the hue & cry opposition is gonna make over this issue.

Looks like general atomics is selling these drones to Pentagon at similar prices .... It says $2.5 bn for 13 MQ9
==========

From the article:
Pentagon inspectors found that the air force’s inability to justify its continuing Reaper purchases risks wasting $2.5bn for 13 mission-ready drones; $2.1bn for 11 training drones; $958m for five test drones; $766m for four air national guard drones; and $1.7bn for nine attrition-reserve drones.
