Due thanks to Deltacamelately, and his reference to this site, I have registered here.
There are some interesting topics and seem to project a balanced tone of discussion.
I live in the semi outback of Australia.
Many years ago, well it feels that way, I signed the dotted line for the Aust Army, or the big Green Machine, as we knew it then. That was somewhere about 68/9, keep forgetting as it was long time ago. I went off to officer trg and got my commission.
Anyway I moved through various postings, pl commd, SI Trade Training, 2 IC Coy and a brief stint CO Coy. Also moved around various units.
I picked up a BEng mining along the way as well. In my last unit I had a wee clash with the Bn OC and Bn 2IC. Decided I did not need them breathing down my neck anymore. Besides I could stuff myself up more competently than they could.
I went into the mining industry as mining engineer, then after picking up a Master of Computing went into the world of academics in computer science. I ended up at a regional campus of one of the main Universities, running my own dept of several academics and about 100 students. I decided that working something like 70 hours a week year in, year out was a bad idea so as I had hit that retirement age I retired.
Now I just work with my horses and fit in a bit of some computer work. In the winter I do a bit of furniture making for myself. In the spring, summer and autumn I train for and compete in endurance riding.
Computer work relates to tactical simulations. None being the FPS style most love. No flashy graphics and take hours/days to get thorough. They also take months to make. Also this covers a bit of coding for specialised editors for these simulations.
