All Grexit needs is a few more disastrous weeks like this

he first two weeks after Syriza's victory in the Greek elections had the effect I feared. A sceptical northern European public was converted into a hostile one.
We saw Yanis Varoufakis unilaterally dismissing the troika — the technocrats who oversee Greek economic policy. We followed with amazement how the Greek finance minister staged a grand European tour like a rock star. We saw him walking into a meeting with hedge fund managers in London and posing outside Downing Street. By the time he reached Berlin on Thursday, German politicians and the media were more hostile than ever. By Friday, Athens found itself isolated at a meeting of finance officials in Brussels.

Payback time? Greek PM seeks reparations over Nazi occupation & war-time loan
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, referring to Nazi Germany's four-year occupation of Greece and a forced war-time loan during World War II that saddled the Greek economy in huge debt, wants Berlin to pay reparations.

Tsipras, leader of the anti-austerity Syriza party, said Athens had a "historical obligation" to claim from Germany billions of euros in reparations for the physical and financial destruction committed during Nazi Germany's occupation of Greece.

Beyond the historical obligation, he said Greece had "a moral obligation to our people, to history, to all European peoples who fought and gave their blood against Nazism," he said in a keynote address to parliament on Sunday.

The Greek leader's comments have resonated far beyond Athens as they place the issue of his country's recent massive bailout at the behest of international creditors in a whole new light.

After Nazi forces took control of Greece in 1941, the stage was set for one of the bloodiest confrontations of World War II as Greek resistance fighters put up a fierce struggle to end the occupation. They were powerless, however, to prevent the Third Reich from extracting an interest-free 476 million Reichsmarks loan from the Greek central bank, which devastated the Greek economy.

A 2012 report by the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, estimated the value of the loan at US$8.25 billion. Greece, however, puts the value of the loan at €11 billion, the To Vima newspaper reported in January, citing confidential financial documents.

Few more years and Greece economy will meet the criteria of joining Eurasian customs union. Some consolation for Putin for losing Ukraine.

What are the chances that Greece will leave EU.
the question is not leaving EU but the eurozone.
at the moment small, because if that happens, Greece will radicly slip away from the EU/NATO influence and go the Russian way.
This is realy the strong playcard of the Greek goverment that every one knows but nobody speaks out. The popular centiment in Greece is very much pro russian and that not only from the left Syriza goverment but also from the far right wing as far as Golden dawn.. specialy within the army..
===================

Greek debt = 320 BILLION euros = 180% GDP !!!

so fu...ing them up and going to drahma is an atractive alternative.. because we will get rid of this unaffortable debt..

But how will Russia be able to help Greece in any way? They themselves are being screwed over by the Americans and Saudis. Their finances are stretched, and the US will not spare them. Oil price crash will squeeze Russia to the core.

5-10B$ is not a big issue for Russia.
But even so , is not sure they will be needed from Greece , but are used as a wild card in the bargening with EU .. so Greece cannot be black mailed..
China also is an other option ..

Greece also plays the TAP card with Azeris , as they are trying to pass their gase tubes from Greece ..

people in EU / NATo know that if SYRIZA failes.. then issues in Greece can go realy the wrong way for them , as KKE (http://www.kke.gr/) and Golden Dawn ( http://xryshaygh.com/en/ http://www.xryshaygh.com/en/view/greece-russia-syriza-and-golden-dawn ) WILL rise up their %

Oh you guys have a strong Orthodox Fraternity with Russia, I though most of East Europe is anti-Russia particularly EU states. Moving back to Drachma would have a bad effect on Euro but how do you think it would solve their debt crisis.

Swapping back to drachma Greece would b able to repay her debts in drachma and devalue it at will. Grexit sounds a smart answer to the crisis. Now that Syriza has put privitization on hold how would Russians or Chinese b willing to give a hand for the bailout without any collateral?

Greece - Serbia - Hungary - Cyprus are pro Russia
Going back to Drahma means that we have no more obligation to pay the debt as there will no issue of black mail and funding frpm EU

but so far this issue is not seen for the short future

rss news: MASTER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FACILITY AGREEMENT - To νέο ΜΝΗΜΟΝΙΟ

MASTER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FACILITY AGREEMENT
between EUROPEAN FINANCIAL STABILITY FACILITY THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC
as Beneficiary Member State THE HELLENIC FINANCIAL STABILITY FUND
as Guarantor and THE BANK OF GREECE
(as amended by the Amendment Agreement dated 12 December 2012)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costas_Lapavitsas
http://costaslapavitsas.blogspot.gr/
"Athens, February 18, 2015
Dear President of the Eurogroup,
Over the last five years, the people of Greece have exerted remarkable efforts in economic adjustment. The new government is committed to a broader and deeper reform process aimed at durably improving growth and employment prospects, achieving debt sustainability and financial stability, enhancing social fairness and mitigating the significant social cost of the ongoing crisis.

The Greek authorities recognise that the procedures agreed by the previous governments were interrupted by the recent presidential and general elections and that, as a result, several of the technical arrangements have been invalidated. The Greek authorities honour Greece's financial obligations to all its creditors as well as state our intention to cooperate with our partners in order to avert technical impediments in the context of the Master Facility Agreement which we recognise as binding vis-a-vis its financial and procedural content.

In this context, the Greek authorities are now applying for the extension of the Master Financial Assistance Facility Agreement for a period of six months from its termination during which period we shall proceed jointly, and making best use of given flexibility in the current arrangement, toward its successful conclusion and review on the basis of the proposals of, on the one hand, the Greek government and, on the other, the institutions.

The purpose of the requested six-month extension of the Agreement's duration is:
(a) To agree the mutually acceptable financial and administrative terms the implementation of which, in collaboration with the institutions, will stabilise Greece's fiscal position, attain appropriate primary fiscal surpluses, guarantee debt stability and assist in the attainment of fiscal targets for 2015 that take into account the present economic situation.
(b) To ensure, working closely with our European and international partners, that any new measures be fully funded while refraining from unilateral action that would undermine the fiscal targets, economic recovery and financial stability.
(c) To allow the European Central Bank to re-introduce the waiver in accordance with its procedures and regulations.
(d) To extend the availability of the EFSF bonds held by the HFSF for the duration of the Agreement.
(e) To commence work between the technical teams on a possible new Contract for Recovery and Growth that the Greek authorities envisage between Greece, Europe and the International Monetary Fund which could follow the current Agreement.
(f) To agree on supervision under the EU and ECB framework and, in the same spirit, with the International Monetary Fund for the duration of the extended Agreement.
(G) To discuss means of enacting the November 2012 Eurogroup decision regarding possible further debt measures and assistance for implementation after the completion of the extended Agreement and as part of the follow-up Contract.
With the above in mind, the Greek government expresses its determination to cooperate closely with the European Union's institutions and with the International Monetary Fund in order: (a) to attain fiscal and financial stability and (b) to enable the Greek government to introduce the substantive, far-reaching reforms that are needed to restore the living standards of millions of Greek citizens through sustainable economic growth, gainful employment and social cohesion.
Sincerely,
Yanis Varoufakis
Minister of Finance
Hellenic Republic"
