Re: Greece -Greece PM says sanctions against Russia 'a road to nowhere

TASS: Russia - Greece PM says his Moscow visit will lay new basis for Russian-Greek ties

TASS: World - Greece PM says sanctions against Russia 'a road to nowhere'
Greece PM says sanctions against Russia 'a road to nowhere'
ATHENS, March 31. /TASS/. Greece does not back the West's sanctions against Russia as this is a "road to nowhere," the country's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in an exclusive interview with TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman on Tuesday.
In the interview ahead of his upcoming visit to Moscow on April 8, the Greek prime minister noted that there is a chance of bringing the trade ties between the two countries to a new level.
"We can have a substantial cooperation that will allow Greece to export its agricultural goods to the Russian Federation," Tsipras stressed.
ATHENS, March 31. /TASS/. The visit to Moscow due on April 8 is expected to lay the new foundation for the Russian-Greek relations, Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in an exclusive interview with TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman on Tuesday.
"This is a possibility for their true reset and for giving a new impetus to the Russian-Greek relations which have very deep roots in history and were hammered out in a joint struggle of our nations," Tsipras said.
The prime minister noted that over the past years the relations with Russia have been frozen: "I do not know if this is like the Siberian winter, but this was winter and now we are having spring and should support this spring for the real development of our relations," he said.
"We are in a geopolitical environment of special tensions and have common challenges, and we need to look at how we treat them," the prime minister said.
"We should see how our nations and countries can really cooperate in many spheres - economy, energy, trade, agriculture, and find out where we can help each other and, first of all, look into how our cooperation can be constructive as I indeed believe that Greece, as a member of the EU, can be a link and a bridge between the West and Russia," he said.
The prime minister suggested that the possibilities for strengthening relations between Greece and Russia could be also related to tourism and also various cultural events.
"In Russia, besides the very important meetings that I will have with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, I will also have a chance to make a speech in one of the central universities of Moscow," he said.
"From this point of view, I believe that the possibility of an exchange and cooperation at the educational level between the Greek and Russian universities is also a very important aspect of enhancing our mutual ties," Tsipras said.
According to the prime minister, 2016 is an important possibility for developing relations as this will be the cross-year of Russia and Greece.
"In 2015 we together mark the 70th anniversary of the Great anti-fascist victory and the victory of nations over Nazism," Tsipras said. "This anniversary has great importance both for the people of Russia and Greece. Our nations hammered out brotherly relations as they conducted a joint fight in the critically important historical moments," he said.

The Russian government reportedly is willing to hold talks with Greece on the possible allocation of new loans and a discount on the price of gas.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian government is willing to hold talks with Greece on the possible allocation of new loans and a discount on the price of gas, the Kommersant newspaper reports.

"We are ready to discuss the issue of providing Greece with a discount on gas: under the contract, its price is tied to the price of oil, which has dropped significantly in recent months. We are also ready to discuss the possibility of issuing new credit to Greece," an anonymous government source told the Russian daily on Tuesday.

According to the source, Russian authorities are interested in acquiring certain assets in Greece and that would be the condition for the allocation of additional loans, should the issue be discussed.

Russia's decision to change the gas route to Turkey sounds entirely justified, member of the Council of the Greek-Russian Chamber of Trade Dimitris Velanis told Sputnik.

Greece Backs Russia's Decision to Scrap Gas Transit via Ukraine
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. According to Kommersant, the visit is highly significant for the Russian government, which seeks to establish warmer relations with the European Union.
The new Greek government, led by the left-wing Syriza party, has taken a pro-Russian stance, calling for the economic sanction imposed on Moscow by the European Union over the Ukrainian crisis to be lifted.

Greece, which imports around 65 percent of its natural gas from Russia, also intends to deepen energy cooperation with Moscow, with the proposed Turkish Stream pipeline set to carry Russian gas across Greece.

Meanwhile relations between Greece and the European Union became strained after Tsipras announced that Greece could abandon austerity obligations imposed on Athens by the troika of international creditors, which includes the European Union, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Greece's debt to the troika is estimated to stand at around $270 billion. Athens and Eurozone finance ministers agreed on the extension of Greece's bailout for four months in February, with Greece having promised to implement a range of economic reforms. The bailout deal expires in late June.

Greece demands €278bn WWII reparations from Germany - more than its debt to EU
Germany owes Greece no less than €278.7 billion in World War II reparations, Athens said, referring to the destruction wrought upon the nation during the Nazi occupation. The sum exceeds Greece's total debt of €240 billion to the EU.

"According to our calculations, the debt linked to German reparations is €278.7 billion euros, including €10.3 billion for the so-called forced loan. All the other amounts are related to allowances for individuals or infrastructure," said the country's deputy finance minister, Dimitris Mardas.

The figure was calculated by a parliamentary committee and the Greek supreme court. The numbers have previously varied between €269 billion and €332 billion.

Mardas added that at the 1946 Paris Conference the amount of reparations was set at $341.2 billion.

The statement comes ahead of left-wing Greek PM Alexis Tsipras's visit to Moscow and meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. The newly elected PM is planning to boost cooperation and strengthen ties with Greece's eastern neighbor.

"‹Greece to turn to Russia for economic help - media
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Tuesday that finance and loans would be discussed at the Moscow talks.

Kommersant newspaper reported a source in Russian government as saying that the Greek PM is also seeking credit from Russia. Other media reports claim that Tsipras plans to negotiate a possible reduction in gas prices from Russia and the lifting of the embargo on certain types of Greek products

Greek lawmakers voted Tuesday to favour of establishing a special committee to examine the circumstances which led the country to enormous bailouts from troika of international creditors - the European Central Bank (ECB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Commission (EC).

"After five years of parliamentary silence on the major issues that caused the bailout catastrophe, today we commence a procedure that will give answers to the questions concerning the Greek people," Tsipras said.

The issue of war reparations dating from the 1941-44 Nazi occupation of Greece is likely to increase already heightened tensions between Athens and Berlin. The two countries are already squabbling over Greek demands to renegotiate the terms of a €240 billion ($260 billion) Troika bailout.

I wholeheartedly support Greeks to get what is due to them ~ German war reparations. For your ref. in 2014 heirs to a Chinese ship owner sued a Japanese company Mitsui OSK and had its ship seized for their unpaid rental / a seized vessel during the wartime. Mitsui had to budge eventually.

So for reparations Greek victims can pick up German companies who caused ww2 impairments and file lawsuits against them, ~Thyssen Krup, Siemens, Volkswagon, u name it, so that Merkel would have to take it really seriously, in connection with the Greece mire.

Here is what you need to know about Putin's meeting with Tsipras
http://rt.com/business/247449-tsipras-meeting-putin-moscow/
reek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. Greece could ask Moscow to bankroll a bailout, Gazprom could agree to a gas discount, or the two sides could talk about how to sidestep EU sanctions.

The new 40-year-old leader of one of the world's most indebted countries with meet with Putin on Wednesday, just one day before the country is due to repay €463.1 million to the International Monetary Fund. The Greek Prime Minister arrives in Moscow on Tuesday.

Is Russia going to bail out Greece?
Rumors have been abuzz that Athens and Moscow are plotting a secret bailout ever since the idea was first floated by Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov days after the Syriza party won the elections in January. Russian daily Kommersant reported that Moscow is ready to offer indirect financial help, citing an unnamed government source.

I feel sorry for you, this whole episode is embarrassing for Greece. Let the bygons be bygones. Finland also considered repatriations in 1990 but let them go. Germany is the anchor or EU, they have paid ten times the old sins.
