Government to develop 700 islands for tourism, Bollywood

NEW DELHI: Many of the over 700 uninhabited islands across India will be developed for tourism, filmmaking, entertainment activities, as honeymoon destinations, maritime security and also for generating non-conventional energy - both wind and solar.

This scheme will be part of the ambitious Sagarmala project. The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the concept note and institutional framework to implement this massive project that Narendra Modi government has revived. The Sagarmala concept was first mooted by Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his last tenure.

"We have a total of 1,208 islands including the uninhabited ones and there are 185 lighthouses. These will be developed as hub of tourist activity. We will carry out a feasibility study," shipping minister Nitin Gadkari said.

However, sources said that before coming out with any such plan, the government would have to consider the environmental impact, rich and fragile ecology of those islands and in some cases the adverse impact on the vulnerable tribal populations living in the nearby islands.

Shipping ministry officials said the plan to develop these islands, particularly the uninhabited ones, came up keeping in mind the need to protect these islands from any unauthorized occupation and for security reasons. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had suggested the shipping ministry to look into the concept of such "out islands" when he was taking a review meeting on infrastructure projects on December 19.

On Friday, Gadkari also said that at least 12 smart cities and several coastal economic zones (CEZs) will come up under the ambitious Sagarmala project. The smart cities will have affordable housing, wind and solar power and green industry. He added a national perspective plan (NPP) for the entire coastline will be prepared within six months to identify potential CEZs. Fund required in 2015-16 for implementation of projects in the initial phase of Sagarmala is pegged at Rs 692 crore.

While preparing the NPP, synergy and integration with planned industrial corridors, dedicated freight corridors, National Highway Development Programme, industrial clusters and SEZs would be ensured, Gadkari said.

It feels great to hear these things. Usually we see no such improvement in these graphs because of not having a special impact on these things but when we see certainly a lot can be gained through it and it work .

Green vultures are waiting to jump on the bandwagon and sabotage the whole effort. India needs new avenues to attract International tourists and these Island development will attract tourists who prefer going Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles. Good move.

It is important to make a presence on these uninhabited islands so that an adversary cannot stealthily occupy it, temporarily or permanently or use it as a forwarding base for illegal activities.

The idea is stellar.

However, one has to ensure that the ecological balance is not disturbed. One can have conducted tours through the jungle on predetermined paths like they have in Malaysia.

As far as the disturbing of tribal people, the same as what is happening on the Andaman Highway (NH 223) on which there was a tamasha organised over the Jarawa people has been stopped. Movement will be in time slots and with no stops and in convoys.

That would be an amazing thing, the reason behind that is the growth that we can see and because it has an impact surely it will help things to grow in a good way.

Few Islands in Lakshadweep are uninhabitated, Moodyji did good by popularising the destination.

However few things needs to be done (hope work is going on):
1. Connectivity only one small plane connects regularly to one island, ships are few, getting a ticket on ship or plane is difficult. Inter island travel too needs major improvement.
2. Permit system needs to be abolished for tourists.
3. VIP culture is prevalent , If a VIP is there other guests are really inconvenienced as these are small islands. Babus should pay from their pockets and shouldn't be granted any VIP treatment.
Hospitality should be given to private players not run by babudom/administration.
4.ecology, sustainability sensitive tourism model.

Next step give better training to SPORTS or remove them and get a good agency to handle tourist queries, tourism should not be run as babushahi with favours thrown to VIP guests. While aam tax paying janatha is given second class treatment.

"This ship was earlier deployed between Anthroth in Lakshadweep and Beypore in Kerala’s Kozhikode."

India srilanka ferry which was inaugurated recently, was plying in lakshadweep.

Let's hope after all this hulla bulla moodyji will give a brand new vessel connecting mainland to lakshadweep.

While we don't want international connectivity atleast increase domestic airline connectivity 7 flights per day and now two more is not enough.

Increase mainland cruise/passenger ships from Mangalore/ Cochin / Calicut/ Trivandrum.

Calicut passenger ships to lakshadweep are stopped.

"Maldives has 325 international departures in the current week. Of these the maximum 35 are by Emirates followed by IndiGo, flydubai and Qatar airways at 28 each. Amongst IndiGo and flydubai, there are 63 weekly departures to Dubai from Male.

Indian carriers have 48 weekly departures and there are 58 flights a week between India and Maldives with 10 departures a week being operated by Maldivian"

Without proper connectivity through more ships, its difficult to increase tourist numbers in lakshadweep.
