I am not sure about the things GOI can or should do but a backdoor message to the military to not be on the wrong side of the history should be sent ASAP.

Once the muscle goes, so goes the power to intimidate the opposition and judiciary.

There are cracks in the armour. This is in addition to replacing two Police Commissioners in last 3 days. It shows not all the Govt. is ready to go under a Dictatorship. India has to act. Sending message to military wouldn't do as the first thing Yameen did was changing the military leadership with his own men. For last 4 years the oppression of opposition was carried out by the military in impunity. The Maldivian military is small and there would hardly a place for pockets for dissidents.

Better to not mess around like that , let them deal with their shit. If we have to kick out the Chinese influence better to do it covertly .
Let the whole world bloody well see that India can take visible actions in self-interest. Was China covert in their penetration of Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan?

If you can't set a visible example of your dominance in your own background, no one will take you seriously in the international arena.

Maldives is our backyard. It is a highly strategic piece of land, access to which can cut off China's naval replenishment conduit on their way to Pakistani ports. The SC of Maldives has given a formal invitation, we are going.

The challenger to Yameen, Mohammed Nasheed is already in Colombo, waiting to be airlifted by India.

Any confirmation of us intervening overtly? I am hearing some rumblings, but no one is willing to say anything solid...

Why Maldives' SC wants India's help: 10 points
TIMESOFINDIA.COM | Updated: Feb 5, 2018, 13:26 IST

HIGHLIGHTS
*The Maldivian Supreme Court last week ordered the immediate release of nine opposition leaders, including exiled former president Mohammed Nasheed, and their retrials. In its order, the court said that the prisoners' 'guilty' verdicts had been "influenced" by the government.

*The ruling may allow Nasheed, who was Maldives' first democratically elected president, to challenge President Abdulla Yameen when he seeks re-election later this year. Nasheed had been sentenced to 13 years in prison on terrorism charges but later received asylum in Britain.

*The court also ordered the reinstatement of 12 MPs, who had been ousted for switching allegiance to the opposition. With their return, President Yameen's Progressive Party of the Maldives will lose its majority in the 85-member Parliament. This could lead to the opposition evicting the speaker and passing 'no confidence' motions against government officials, reported Reuters.

*On Sunday, the 12 ousted lawmakers, who were later reinstated, entered Parliament despite military deployment to block their entry into the building.

*In a statement released on Friday, India said it was "closely monitoring" the situation, and urged the Maldivian government to "respect and abide by the order of the apex court."

*The ruling led to several clashes between opponents of the country's government and its police in the capital Male.

*However, Yameen has shown no inclination to implement the order yet, even as the apex court on Sunday categorically asked that the ruling be complied with.

"There is nothing preventing the prosecutor general from seeking a re-trial after the order has been implemented (and prisoners released)," the Supreme Court said in a statement.

*Meanwhile on Sunday, the country's attorney general alleged that the court was trying to impeach Yameen, even as he warned that the president can be ousted only through a vote in Parliament. He said that he had asked national bodies and defence units to disregard any Supreme Court ruling on impeaching Yameen.

*Highly-placed sources in the Maldivian Supreme Court on Sunday told TOI that Yameen waslooking to sack judges of the apex court , including chief justice Abdulla Saeed, by filing false cases against them. It was also feared that military rule could be a very real possibility.

According to an earlier report by TOI, Yameen is said to have told a gathering of supporters about the Supreme Court ruling: "This will be sorted out soon... I'll deal with the SC."

*The same sources in the court have also urgently requested India and other democratic countries for help.

"The chief of judicial administration, Hasan Saeed, had his home raided on bribery charges and judges are being intimidated. We need India to take tough measures to ensure that rule of law is implemented in the Maldives," the source told TOI.

The Indian mission in Male, according to sources in New Delhi, is in touch with "all relevant agencies" involved in the matter.

This is an opportunity on a golden platter for us to cut the roots of both Wahabi fanaticism and further Chinese inroads into the IOR.

There is strong circumstantial evidence that this sudden fallout between the Chief Justice and the President was orchestrated by us to respond to the FTA. What remains to be seen is whether we are willing to follow it up with direct intervention and placing Nasheed at the helm. I hope this happens sooner than later.

No official confirmation yet, but the unofficial takeaway is that a country only asks for help publicly after all military assets have already landed. The SC wouldn't have asked for India's help knowing that the Maldives military will be alert and try to prevent any landing, with help from Pakistan and China. It's more than likely that Indian assets have already landed. The SC is signalling their government that it has other means at its disposal, by overtly asking for help. That is my political interpretation.

Whatever assets we need for the task are already inside Maldives.

Our assets are not just military. We got that civil society thingy going on. Civil protests have erupted 30 minutes ago (the same kind which led to the ouster of Rajapakshe in SL). Maldives Army has sealed the parliament and arrested the opposition MPs. All their supports are outside, protesting.

Yes, you can do it covertly when you wont have any asset in the Govt. and it will be ruled by a hostile jihadi regime. India is sending Peacekeepers worldwide and when this is an optimum opportunity, it cannot send couple of destroyers and a regiment to overthrow this anti-India regime when it will have the blessings of USA and Europe too?

Also, this kind of opportunity will never present itself as if Nasheed gets through this without trouble and retains power, he will bloody destroy the opposition. Already due to spineless management of foreign affairs by India Nasheed got away with so much. Now, India is invited by SC of Maldives and opposition is begging for Indian intervention. If we miss the opening, we will seriously rue this as it will be another Pakistan in making.

What is point of having such a huge navy and claiming to tule Indian ocean, if we cannot take a stern step in such an opportune moment?

Don't forget we have a history of meddling in Maldivian affairs through Op Cactus and our meddling was positively welcomed.
We should definitely restore the rule of law in Maldives as requested by the SC of Maldives. This, of course assuming that the world is with India (USA, EU, Rus).

Intervention should be merciless on those disrupting the rule of law in Maldives, much like the PRC has behaved on various peoples - after all the yahoos destroying the rule of law in the Maldives are in cahoots with PRC.

No free money, grants etc post operation. Maldives is almost 500% richer than India on a pet capita basis. If any aid / arms sold and monies loaned, rates should approximate those charged by PRC.

Power is all that Yahoo jihadis respect.
