Lahore (PTI) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday said the United States should offer Pakistan a civil nuclear cooperation deal similar to the one it finalised with India in order to maintain "balance" in the region.

"As far as civil nuclear cooperation is concerned, the US has given this facility to India and we think they should give a similar facility to Pakistan to maintain the balance in this region," Mr. Gilani said.

Pakistan has held talks with France on civil nuclear cooperation, he said during a brief interaction with reporters on the sidelines of an official function here.

Asked about India's strong reaction to the release of Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohd Saeed by a Pakistani court and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna's comments that bilateral talks could not be resumed till Pakistan took credible action against terrorism emanating from its soil, Mr. Gilani said: "That is their point of view. As far as we are concerned, action can be taken only when there is evidence."

However, Mr. Gilani acknowledged that there are loopholes in Pakistan's laws for tackling terrorism. He said the government would consult political parties to find ways to improve such legislation.

"We have the resolve to end terrorism and we will examine what legislation is needed to make this more effective," he said.

Lol!! They were also asking for an outright grant of $50 billion at the last donor conference. This is the height of shamelessness. In Strobe Talbott's book, there's a paragraph where he compares India's and Pakistan's diplomats. Pakistan's dipomats come across as unprofessional, arrogant and prone to making ridiculous requests, while Indian diplomats, according to him, were thoroughly professional, had very good grounding in the basics of their position, and conducted themselves with finesse. In one of their meetings with Pakistani officials after the nuke tests, one Pakistani diplomat apparently lunged across the table wanting to hit Talbott, and had to be physically restrained!

Pakistan, according to him, was like a robber who points the gun at his own head and threatens to shoot if you don't hand over your wallet!

That wont makes me surprised at all.:

It will sure help the pakistanis very much in their fight against Terror. Last month, they asked for Predator drones to be transferred to Pakistan Armed Forces. It was all over the news, i couldnt find any website to back though.

Anyway, More goodies for pakistan. After all they did some work helping the armericans flushing Taliban. We can expect a lot more $$$$ and weapons pouring in by the US.

With Obama in the house and the way the new administration is treating India (read=fucking up what Bush did to improve relations), I won't be surprised if Pakistan actually gets this deal.

No way!
It's only these Pakistanis who think they're on par with India. And should get the same thing India does.Add a dictator and they're no better than North Korea.Well even the DPRK doesn't beg.
I guess they're feeling annoyed on being bunched up with Afghanistan and being referred to being 'a part of the problem'

What everyone has missed here is the use of the words "maintain balance" in the region.
Now how does civil nuclear deal in anyway requiring balancing? Its just a case of Pakistan being like a child who wants everything his big brother gets or has.

How will Pakistan finance the nuclear power plants? More begging? That itself will make the major powers not give any deal to Pakistan as they know that they will be forced to finance the nuclear plants while they get to make money from India. There is a limit to which even the west can go.

India ask US to ink a Nucler deal not only to fulfill its long standing energy needs but also to end decade old sanction on india to freely purchase high end technological input which was denied to it earlier. Under such circumstances, then for what purpose Pak PM asking for Nucler deal, since he can no longer go on asking international communities to provide whatever it want just on a token gesture of creating a balanced profile between the two nations. Heck, atleast he must have ask for Nucler deal for energy purpose, which atleast made some sense.

C'mon I dont think Pakistan can afford to buy nuclear reactors on aid. Each reactor costs hell a lot. They just cant afford it. They can build it but cannot buy them. It is useless for them to have a deal with US as the companies are already incurring losses and they cant pay for it.

Obama has just trebled the aid, so may be they can afford to buy atleast one reactor. Anyway, it is not in Paks genes to buy anything, they will just beg it by putting gun to their own head, like always...........:2guns:
