Lt Gen Bikram Singh is next Army Chief

Eastern Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh, will be the next Chief of Army Staff. He will head the 1.3-million strong Indian Army succeeding General Vijay Kumar Singh, who retires from service on May 31, 2012.

The Defence Ministry announced the Army Chief-designate on Saturday almost three months ahead of schedule as against the normal practice of 60 days. The move could be seen to remove uncertainty following a rash of speculative reports that Gen. Singh could put in his papers early which could alter succession plan.

It came a day after the current Army Chief told an English news weekly that he was not going to resign. A section of media speculated that Gen. V.K. Singh would resign after the Supreme Court disposed of his petition last month on the year of birth controversy.

Gen. Bikram Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment on March 31, 1972 and during the last four decades, served in a variety of Command and Staff appointments.Besides having commanded a Corps in the Northern Command, he has served as Deputy Force Commander of multi-nation UN Peace Keeping Mission in Congo. He had also served as UN Observer in Nicaragua and El Salvador during early 1990s.

Lt.Gen. Bikram Singh has studied with distinction at the Defence Services Staff College, the Army War College and the US Army War College, Pennsylvania. He also has a M. Phil in Defence Management from Indore University.

He is decorated with Param Vishist Seva Meda, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishist Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishist Seva Medal. He is also one of the Honorary ADCs of the President of India. Married to Surjeet Kaur, the couple have two sons.

But his daughter in Law is a Citizen of Pakistan.......

It is learnt that a parliamentarian of UPA coalition, has written a letter to the Prime Minister on 07 Jul 2011 raising serious allegations against Lt Gen Bikram Singh. He has asked clarification regarding the nationality of daughter- in-law of Lt Gen Bikram Singh. It is alleged that the daughter-in-law of Lt Gen Bikram Singh is a citizen of Pakistan and is residing in Dubai. The Army Rules clearly lay down that if any close relative of defence personnel is a citizen/national of some other country then he has to inform regarding the same in writing since it can have serious security related implications.

His name was floating around since the age saga if the current chief started.

If the Lt Gen Bikram Singh has a Paki daughter in law then it is pretty serious issue. What needs to be confirmed is what kind of relations they share. Estranged or healthy. Why did they not ask her to come to India and take Indian citizenship if relations were cordial.

The General will have to answer the questions.

He has a relatively short tenure, will be retiring in 2014. Armed Forces have become too political, they need to be weaned away from politics.

Saar two years is a long time as army chief. Ask the current one how long the days are.

Yes the army has politicized and the too level is more like the bureaucracy these days I am told.

Rumors suggest that Lt Gen Bikram Singh is a Congress man.

The way things have panned out and reports of the happenings in the media makes me feel it's not a rumor but a fact. Many vouching for him it seems. Or may be I am just reading too much.

I hope he is apolitical and does not entertain any favors for anyone and does the job he is suppose to.

Bikram Singh who is an 59 year old individual will be the first army chief who joined the 1.13 billion force after the 1971 war with the Pakistan. According to the government statement issued Lt Gen Bikram Singh has been designated the next army chief. He currently heads the army eastern command and will take the position when his predecessor Gen V.K Singh will retire from the service. The interesting part is that there is a certain controversy alleged with the name of Lt Gen Bikram Singh as well that he was involved in a fake shootout case in Kashmir. Another very interesting issue is that defense ministry has sought a detailed vigilance from the intelligence agencies about him after it was alleged that his daughter in law is a Pakistani citizen. But the rumors turned out to be false. Kashmir police has given a clean chit to Bikram Singh even though the petition is still pending over him.

Supreme Court asked to stop Bikram Singh from taking over as army chief

Supreme Court asked to stop Bikram Singh from taking over as army chief

New Delhi: When General VK Singh, the chief of the Indian Army, steps down at the end of May, he is meant to be replaced by Lt General Bikram Singh, currently the Eastern Army Commander.

But as with all things related to the army recently, that's turning into a controversy. A Public Interest Litigation or PIL filed in the Supreme Court today says that the army chief-designate was involved in a fake encounter in 2001. The Supreme Court has not yet admitted this petition. The PIL has been filed by a group of retired officers and bureaucrats headed by Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas, who retired as the navy chief. The petition says that Lt General Singh failed to take action against officers who were involved in sexual harassment and rape when they were posted to the Congo in 2008 as part of the UN peace-keeping mission.

The PIL alleges that the Lt General's promotion is politically influenced. It says "a person holding high office should be able to act independently and impartially."

In March 2001, a 60-year-old man was killed in an encounter by the Army on the outskirts of Anantnag in Kashmir. Lieutenant General Singh was then a Brigadier heading the 1 Sector Rashtriya Rifles headquartered in Anantnag. He was injured in the encounter and was given a gallantry medal. A colonel and another jawan were killed too.

The Army claimed that the man who was killed was a wanted foreign militant. In court, however, his family has argued that Abdullah Bhat was a daily wage earner.
