FRCV was conceived around 2017 and planned to be inducted beginning by 2025-27. It was an ill-conceived idea, IA wanted global tank manufacturers has been with their own design and then transfer the design IP rights to IA. There was no mention, whether the design would have to be old, new or futuristic. Neither any crew arrangement, no. of crew, gun caliber, remote controlled turret etc . were mentioned in the RFI. Only weight requirement was stipulated to be 50 tons +- 15%, which puts it between 42.5-57.5 tons.
The Russians and the Koreans have informally offered their export (downgraded) versions of Armata and K2, respectively to the MOD.
Current status of FRCV is that it has been put to back burner. Present focus is upgrading some T-72s and the whole T-90 fleet.
In the indigenous front, Arjun MK1A has been awaiting order after successfully clearing trials, while DRDO is developing Arjun mk2 (with turret and hull redesigned) as well as NGMBT.
