The best way to use an old T72 is to design an unmanned turret for it and use it as a light tank for the ladakh corps. And replace the T72s with T 90 newer variant. The IA can easily use the existing infrastructure for logistics. It can also help iron out the issues for unmanned turret for FMBT.
Ukraine came up with a similar concept for upgrade of legacy tanks like T-64 and T-72.

DRDO should come up with similar concepts. We have a huge inventory of T-72 and retired T-55 tanks.

The Ajeya upgrade in T-72 is not very modern upgrade, in terms of protection. T-72 inherently has very bad armour protection. There are large number of upgrade packages for T-72 especially in the East european countries, which have much better modular armour and ERA coverages. For example:
Polish PT-91 (local variant of T-72)

Czech proposed T-72 upgrade:

Serbian upgrade(M -95 local version):

DRDO proposed upgrade (Tank Ex):

Weighing at 48 tons, and armed with 120 mm arjun gun, it would be very potent choice. Additional ERA armour can be installed. Unfortunately, Tank ex was rejected. It had the potential to be exported as the Chinese are exporting their VT-4.

Well the costs(Ex: The V46-6 is around 10Lakh but the V92-S2 is over 33Lakh!) matter as well.Except for maybe Russia, no operates such massive number of T-72s and comparing them to outsiders is not very Apples to Apples.

But thanks to Arjun, some components(Mainly ERA) has made it to the upgrade.

Not really a fair comparison
Syria's top end tanks and just about a quarter of their inventory are these t-72s.
India's effective inventory is 60% t-90 / Arjun, both of which a generation ahead

Secondly we have to budget based in the opponents.
The counterparts for our 2nd line tanks (which is what the t-72 is) are 35-50 year old t-59 / 69s s in the Napak army and light tanks in the Chinese side.

The real kicker as far as the Pakis/Chicom are concerned will be the tactics.
Employment of Armour is a forte of the Indian Army(with assistance from the Airforce too in key areas)
