France and Germany Plan New 5th Generation Fighter, is it an Opportunity for India?
Published July 14, 2017 SOURCE: Anand SG / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG

France and Germany have announced their intention to work together to develop a new advanced “European” 5th Generation fighter jet which will be the successor to the France’s Dassault Rafales and Germany’s Eurofighter Typhoons. France and German are planning to come up with a Road Map by Mid of 2018.

European fighter jet is still in infancy and a clean slate program which India has been looking for long to help its workforce get enough experience in design and development of advanced 5th generation fighter jet so that it can be helpful to develop its own 5th generation AMCA fighter aircraft.

Lack of Progress on Indo-Russian proposed FGFA 5th Generation fighter jet suggests that difference between two over work share agreements, price and transfer of technology has not lead to any breakthrough even after both concluded a design agreements Nearly Seven Years ago. Since France and Germany are yet to work out basic requirements for development of new European fighter jet it can be predicted somewhat that new fighter jet will be Twin-engined Medium Class Stealth Fighter jet designed for Air-Superiority and Strike Missions just like the predecessor they will be replacing.

France and Germany both have the technology required to develop this new jet and it is expected the new jet will enter production by 2030 and will have continued production line even beyond 2040. While Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale are still getting export orders and technologically are still relevant but growing export orders of American F-35 5th Generation fighter jet will soon lead to sharp fall in its price due to a streamlined production line leading to prospective future customers moving away from 4.5++ Generation fighters like Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale in long run since both are still 80’s designed fighter jets which cannot incorporate Stealth in any future variants .

For India, it could be a win-win situation if a deal for FGFA with Russia is scrapped ultimately and India is able to stay away from American temptation called F-35. If India is able to become third partner country in the project it will bring in required R&D investment money and also come with committed number of fighter jet order. Since the Project is a Clean Slate development of a 5th Generation fighter jet, India can add its required inputs and requirements and will also be able to contribute its own technology for the project and vice versa also receive transfer of technology and along with ownership status to profit from any future export.

This seems to be an european 5th Gen fighter. Highly doubtful they would allow us into this as development partners.

While France and GermMany are thinking up about a "new" 5th Gen platform, the US has finished its 5th gen and is moving on the 6th Gen; Russia has also finished its 5th Gen and is moving to early developmental stages of 5++ and 6th gens.

And India? Looking for MRCA 2.0 probably

Hope It will not be a repeat of EF Story. EF was a good plane but design a at least a decade or two late. With Russia already offering comparable multiple iterations of Sukhoi 30 at relatively cheap prices, US having moved on to Fifth Generation pregnant Buffalo oops I mean F 35, EF was sort of dead on arrival.

France & Germany will have 5th generation, when Russia would be planning or design phase for 6th gen(probably in collaboration with Chinese). US would be flying 6th Gen manned and unmanned platform. India would be looking to import F 35 while lamenting on crashing LCA's&Sukhoi's due to lack of spares.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

India surely can sink money in this program, but will have to kiss AMCA goodbye or will have to make AMCA as research thesis project stretching over decades on a wild hope that though AMCA cant be inducted, it might help in designing a 6th gen fighter(aka repeat of Marut/ LCA saga)

The Europeans see their Aerospace industry extinct if they dont come together,
USA, Russia and China have their 5th gen project, Japan and Korea too have something being developed. Europe on other hands is into cost cutting and no European nation can have a 5th Gen project on its own as that might put the cost of plane in tune of say US$ 200 M per plane. But however if they come together the cost could be much lower as R&D cost would be shared and there might be big number to produce and hence cost per unit reduces, exactly what happens with F-35

But this is just in planning stage and maybe it wont be ready for another 2 decades so by that time we should be having AMCA ready (hopefully)

PMF (FGFA is now called PMF) is incing slowly and by end of this year, they expect a deal to be signed.

One thing people should know, 5th Gen planes are cutting edge tech, but they are expensive to use and to maintain, thus it might make sense to have a good ratio of 5th Gen planes that act as the sword (strike attack) and 4th Gen plane that act as bulk so as to have a balance between ability and numbers.

It's going to be a disaster. It will take years to decide the specifications . Even if it ever flies nobody is going to buy a product where many nation hold IP. Even then it will we insanely expensive ala Rafael.

India should not get involved.

This is good news for NATO. A new 5th gen fighter for France and Germany will definitely boost the military capabilities of NATO. But we are looking at 20 year development period, that is until 10 years down the road France drops out and pursues it's own 5th Gen much like how it did with Rafale.

In the end it will cost a lot more than what Germany will pay for if it buys F-35. But France and Germany know how to make fighters and if they do succeed in making their own 5th gen plane then no doubt that will be a formidable platform, albeit, a little late in the game.
