Hamilton leads a McLaren 1-2 in Istanbul

Lewis Hamilton (right), who won the Turkish Grand Prix congratulates team-mate Jenson Button for finishing second in Istanbul on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were gifted a one-two for McLaren at the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday when the leading Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel collided.

Vettel tried to pass Webber for the lead in the 42nd lap but cut inside as he was far from past the Australian. Vettel damaged his vehicle beyond repair while Webber at least managed to salvage third-place after a pit stop to replace the front wing. The McLaren's took full advantage of the drama as Hamilton claimed his first season victory and 12th overall after briefly being passed by Button in the 49th lap.

Webber at least maintained the championship lead with 93 points, but now has Button (88) and Hamilton (84) on his heels. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has 79 while Vettel remained stranded on 78 and dropped from second to fifth place.

"I wasn't too eager ... I felt I could go faster. I used my chance and was inside. I concentrated on the brakes point for T12. I was inside and had priority for the next turn," said Vettel, who refused to take the blame.

"It is stupid under team-mates, but I should have been given the necessary space." Webber handily won the start while both McLarens were ambushed, with Vettel passing Hamilton and Michael Schumacher getting past Button. However, the Brits responded instantly with Hamilton back in second place in turn three and Button fourth again shortly afterwards.

Hamilton started to mount pressure on Webber from lap 12 onwards but never had a realistic chance of passing the Australian and then even found himself a place down four laps later. Webber and Hamilton came into the pits simultaneously in the 16th but Hamilton had to be held up a fraction because Webber was passing, and this split second was enough for Vettel, who had changed tyres a lap earlier, to slip past the 2008 champion. Button remained fourth despite pitting another lap later and the McLarens found no way to attack the Red Bulls as the top four were close together but in a procession.

A threat of rain occurred halfway through the race but the shower which could have shaken up the pecking order never materialised.

Instead, it was the Red Bulls who provided the shake-up as Webber was denied a third straight victory from pole.

Button did better when he passed Hamilton in search of his third season win at the end of the 48th lap but Hamilton countered seconds later to reclaim the lead.

The McLarens needed to conserve fuel in the end but handily won, with Hamilton crossing the line after 58 laps in 1 hour 28 minutes 43.420 seconds. Button trailed by 2.4 seconds and Webber was 24 seconds off the pace.

Schumacher came fourth ahead of Mercedes GP team-mate Nico Rosberg, his best result since his return to racing this season. Robert Kubica (Renault), Felipe Massa, Alonso (both Ferrari), Adrian Sutil (Force India) and Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber) completed the top 10 for the points.

Qualifying - Red Bull sweep to British pole

Sebastian Vettel will start the British Grand Prix from pole position for Red Bull after narrowly beating team mate Mark Webber. The two of them were inseparable in all three sessions, but Vettel just edged out the Australian with a lap of 1m 29.615s compared to 1m 29.758s.

It then transpired that there were only two of the latest RB6 front wings available and that Vettel got the second as a replacement after his original broke in final practice this morning. A tight-lipped Webber simply said: "The team is happy with the result today".

Behind them, only Fernando Alonso really got anywhere close, and he was seventh-tenths off pole for Ferrari with his lap of 1m 30.426s. Lewis Hamilton drove heroically in a difficult McLaren to take fourth place with 1m 30.556s, and Nico Rosberg was close to him in the Mercedes with 1m 30.625s.

Robert Kubica was his usual determined yet unobtrusive self as he put the lead Renault into sixth spot with 1m 31.040s ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who could not get sufficient temperature into his Bridgestone tyres as he lapped in 1m 31.172s. Rubens Barrichello will start eighth for Williams on 1m 31.175s, with Pedro de la Rosa (1m 31.274s) and Michael Schumacher (1m 31.430s) sharing row five for BMW Sauber and Mercedes respectively.

Webber set the Q2 pace with 1m 30.114s and Vettel ran second on 1m 30.480s after feeling that he just pushed too hard.

Neither of the Force Indias made it through, despite Adrian Sutil pushing really hard to record 1m 31.399s and Vitantonio Liuzzi's straight-line speed deficit (4 km/h) kept him to 1m 31.708s. That left them 11th and 15th, with Kamui Kobayashi 12th for BMW Sauber on 1m 31.421s, Nico Hulkenberg 13th for Williams on 1m 31.635s and a very disappointed Jenson Button only 14th on 1m 31.699s in the second McLaren. That is assuredly not where the reigning champion had envisaged starting. He just didn't get the car sorted.

Renault's Vitaly Petrov had looked very strong in Q1, but had an electronic problem at the start of Q2 and played no real part in it. He lines up 16th on 1m 31.796s, ahead of Sebastien Buemi, who took his Toro Rosso round in 1m 32.012s.

Q1 made it clear what sort of pace would be needed for Q3 as Vettel set the pace with 1m 30.841s from Webber on 1m 30.858s.

Further back, Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari had 17th place until a late improvement put Liuzzi in Q2, so the Spaniard was the first faller with 1m 32.430s. Behind him Heikki Kovalainen jumped ahead of Timo Glock's improved Virgin as he popped in a 1m 34.405 for Lotus. Glock was 20th with a challenging 1m 34.775s, with Jarno Trulli next in the second Lotus on 1m 34.864s and Virgin's Lucas di Grassi 22nd on 1m 35.212s. At the back, Karun Chandhok lapped his HRT in 1m 36.576s, with team mate Sakon Yamamoto last on 1m 36.968s.

Mark Webber wins British GP

Mark Webber cruised to his third Formula One victory of the season on Sunday after overtaking Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix.

The Australian finished 1.36 seconds ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren in second.

Webber led throughout after controversially pushing pole-sitter Vettel wide on the opening lap at Silverstone.

"I was obviously keen to make it my corner and it worked out well for me," Webber said. "The car was faultless all day."

Vettel, who won the British GP last year, recovered to finish seventh after also picking up a puncture in the opening lap and being forced to the back of the field.

Hamilton leads the overall standings with 145 points, 12 ahead of McLaren teammate Jenson Button on 133. Webber is now third with 128.

"Not bad for a number two driver," Webber quipped over his radio as he celebrated his victory lap.

Webber's car was equipped with the old version of Red Bull's front wing for qualifying Saturday after the new design was stripped and handed to Vettel, who subsequently took pole.

Webber had still felt aggrieved in the pits in the minutes before the race started, conceding that he "wasn't too happy" about the decision.

"Hopefully it will be a pretty straightforward race, with the starting positions reversed," he said.

It turned out more than that - with Webber surging into the lead and Vettel slipping right to the back early on.

Struggling at the back, it took the safety car on lap 31 of 52 to enable Vettel to pick up pace and start overhauling his slower rivals.

The main beneficiary of Vettel's disastrous start was Hamilton, with the 2008 champion moving up two places to second ahead of the German and Fernando Alonso.

Nico Rosberg of Mercedes claimed third - the German's best showing since China in April - depriving Jenson Button of his first podium finish on home soil as the defending world champion climbed 10 places from 14th on the grid to finish fourth.

i think it will be too much of an ask to expect him to deliver on points in his first season but more importantly is he able to complete the race consistently?

Very saddening to see the parlous state of F1. Was bored again by the tedium at Silverstone.
I would love to see proper wheelbanging racing again. Reduce the ridiculous overdependence on aerodynamic downforce, put in proper 4 liter big engines, limit telemetry to maybe 5 safety related parameters.
The thrill and danger that should be part of any type of motor racing is absent.

its been ages since i followed this sport but back then when i used to it sure used to be one rubber rubbing the other and what a tussle it used to be between mika haikennen (hope i got the spelling right there) and shumi, and back then there was such fierce rivalry.

In the just concluded Belgian GP, Force India managed to score 13 points, there second best result this season, along with Nico Hulkenberg grabbing his career best 4th place. With this race, Force has moved to 59 points, passing Williams to be placed 7th in constructor standings. Here is the after race talk from the drivers and the principal.

Hulkenberg: I was thinking we could finish on the podium | Track Talk | Features | F1PULSE.com

Nico Hulkenberg
"I'm delighted with the result today – my best finish in Formula 1. It's a result that the whole team has worked hard for and I want to say a huge 'thank you' to all the guys because everything went perfectly today. The start was eventful, but fortunately I avoided all the debris and was able to take advantage of the situation. I was up a high as second and for a while I was even thinking we could finish on the podium. But the race was tough; I had some great fights with Kimi (Raikkonen) and Michael (Schumacher), and I was always on the limit. For us it was clear that we had to stop twice and we made the strategy work. So I've got a big smile on my face today because it's just the result we needed for our fight in the championship."

Paul di Resta
"A tough race for me largely due to the KERS failure on the car just before the race, which really hurt my performance and speed on the straights. I couldn't really attack or defend, which is a shame because I was up to fourth place at the start, but we couldn't capitalise on it. I kept battling and tried my best to come away with the final point, but so much more was possible today."

Vijay Mallya, Team Principal
"Spa usually delivers drama and great racing, and today's Grand Prix was full of both. Nico drove a brilliant race to finish fourth on a day when it was important to capitalise on the first lap incident that befell some of our competitors. He stayed out of trouble and ran as high as second after the safety car and showed strong pace with a perfect two-stop strategy. We've been waiting for a result like this for a while and it's a great reward for Nico and the entire team. We could have scored even more points had Paul's race not been compromised by the KERS failure, and he did well to pick up a point today. The result is important for our fight in the constructors' championship because we have now moved ahead of Williams. We will try and carry this momentum into Monza next weekend."

At the Budh F 1circuit the only people who made money was 3M who were selling the ear plugs. Seems Aayush you did not buy the ear plugs.

Ear plugs are must. Otherwise you can have pain in your ears for 1-2 days. The sound bytes produced the F1 cars is immense.
