About Vietnam Railways..

Vietnam Railways network with a total length of 2,600 km connecting neighborhoods, cultural centers and agricultural and industrial regions except the Mekong Delta.

Vietnam Railways linking China via two ways:

  • With China's Yunnan province to Lao Cai
  • With Guangxi China through Lang Son Province


Vietnam Railways is also potentially linked to the railway network of Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia to Singapore and Laos when the railway was developed.

Vietnam Railways is using three kinds of gauge, which is 1000 mm sugars, sugar standard (1435 mm)(standard gauge) and integrated (whole 1,435 mm and 1,000 mm)(mixed gauge).

Vietnam Railway using two blocks of concrete sleepers, wooden sleepers and iron. Type ray 43 kg / m is used on most networks and use of hard links between the rails and sleepers. Recently a number of links used elastic tests on a number of stages.

Bridges and culverts

Having all 1,790 railway bridge with a length of 45,368 meters and 31 for common rail – road 11,753 feet long, while the total length of bridges on the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City is 36,056 meters, account for 63% of the total length of the railway bridge.

There are 180 temporary steel girder length 18,084 meters, accounting for 31% of the total length of railway bridges. The total length of 13,274 meters of concrete bridge which is 9,179 meters on the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh

There are 5,128 culverts with a length of 80,850 meters on the railway.

Ham

There are 39 tunnels with a length of 11,512 meters in the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City has 27 tunnels with a length of 8,335 meters.

Signal systems

Closing system using electrical equipment close to tram / light colors to be installed on most of the northern railway line. Half-way closed system automatically installed on the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh.

Regarding information systems, Vietnam railway loading machines use almost three 1-channel, 3 channels, 12 channels are manufactured in Hungary between 1972 and 1979. High frequency radio system used for emergency reserve system in some areas of the railway network.

Wire system is used more in long-distance transmission of information. Pair copper cables are used to signal local information.

Since 1998, the Corporation of Vietnam's railway system of channels using the channel data transmission speed of 64 kbps leased by the Corporation and Telecommunications in the direction of Hanoi Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi – Da Nang to telephone and data transmission technology using Microband ATM (asynchronous transmission mode of microstrip).

Historical development

History of the Vietnam Railway – one of the oldest industries of Vietnam from the first page opened in 1881 to start the construction of the first railway line Saigon – My Tho. After four years, the first train began to depart from Saigon to My Tho on 20/07/1885. In the period between 1882 and 1936 the main roads have been built by French technology on the type of pain directly traced 1m and has formed on the railway system.

During the war and until the reunification of Vietnam Railways were heavily damaged. After reunification, since in 1976 the Railway was mostly restored, especially the North-South Railway Unification. However, due to lack of capital to the full recovery is not feasible. After restructuring and move to market mechanisms in 1989, Vietnam Railways embarked on programs to restore and modernize the Railways for the railway to become a leading transportation in Vietnam, close contribute positively to economic growth of the country and integrate with the rail in Southeast Asia.

To date 4-3-2003 34/QD-TTg Decision on the establishment of railway corporations Vietnam, on 13-6-2003, at the Headquarters of Vietnam Railway Union has implemented the decision of the Prime Minister and Minister of Transport appointed the members of the Board, President and CEO of DSVN company. Since 7-7-2003 Vietnam Railways officially went into operation under the new organizational model: Railway Corporation in Vietnam, including mass transport including four units of the company's operation Passenger rail Hanoi Transportation Company Saigon passenger rail company, rail freight operators and the Center for railway transport.

Vietnam Railways History

The first line of Vietnam Railways was constructed in 1881 with the length of 71 km linking Sai Gon and My Tho. Then the Trans-Viet line was operated in 1936. Up to now, railways network has made a rapid leap compared with the starting period in term of its scale and operation capacity. Vietnam Railway network consists of 7 main lines linking and passing through over 35 provinces and cities with difficult terrains.


With over 125 years of operation, Vietnam Railways has continually been developed and grown to become a State-owned corporation operating and maintaining all the infrastructure of the national railway network.

Milestones in VNR Development

- 1881 The first railway line in Vietnam and in Indochina with the length of 71 km between Saigon and My Tho was established

- 1898 "The railway network in Indochina and the railway line accessing into China" project was approved by the French Government and Parliament

- 1936 Completion of railway network in Vietnam with total length of 2600 km

- 1946 President Ho Chi Minh sent a letter to Vietnam Railways on 21 October praising the staff for their best services. Then the letter date is considered the Vietnam Railways Tradition Day.

- 1955 The Prime Minister promulgated a decision to establish General Railway Administration.

- 1976 After 36 years of separation, the rail line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city was reunified connecting the North and the South of the country.

- 1990 The General Railway Administration was reformed to be the Vietnam Railway Union according to Decision No. 575/QD/TCCB-LD dated April 10, 1990 of Minister of Transport.

- 1999 The railway itineraries from the North to the South and vice versa were shortened from 58 hours (1988) to 32 hours (1999).

- 2000 The 2nd generation passenger cars were firstly manufactured by VNR. These cars have been supplied with new features and highly valued by the public.

- 2003 Establishment of Vietnam Railways Corporation based on the former Vietnam Railway Union under Decision No. 34/2003 QD-TTg dated March 4, 2003 of the Prime Minister

- 2005 The Law on Railways was approved by the National Assembly. It is the highest legal base for a sustainable development of VNR.
