While the final language on Ukraine made some US allies uneasy, supporting the compromise presented a bigger opportunity to align more closely with major democracies in the Global South that ultimately serve as key swing nations when it comes to Russia’s war and other global issues. G-7 leaders publicly praised the outcome, with Sunak insisting that the language adopted was “very strong” and that “Russia is completely isolated.”
Other senior European officials said China shot itself in the foot by staying away from the summit, allowing India to cement its leadership of the Global South and providing the US and Europe a clear path to strengthen ties with emerging markets. Even Russia, represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after Vladimir Putin stayed home, saw the agreement as a win. Moscow was pleased that BRICS democracies served as interlocutors with the G-7, according to a person familiar with the situation, underscoring China’s status as an outsider looking in.

Anti India PPM candidate ahead in Maldives' presidential elections. Next round on 30 Sep.

Maldives is pretty easy to manipulate. The country is dependent on anyone who can throw it some finances, build some limited infrastructure and prop up someone who will be willing to listen.

Maldives is more like and Islamic version of Nepal - a banana republic. We should only give it enough attention to ensure that the PLA does not have a station there. That's about it. The rest of it should be focused on securing Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

Let Afghanistan and Pakistan destroy each other.

doesn't Maldives only have a population of half a million? it can be subverted easily using money and other means.
Indeed 5,21,000 people as of 2021. The problem is that we play nice with them; more like a gentle elder brother guiding the younger one, rather than a hardass power that conveys its point. Yameen can easily be tamed by some well-planned operations. He just wants power but his increasingly belligerent methods of turning against us are annoying, to say the least.

Maldives needs to be managed the way the US manages the Caribbean countries; with a gentle but unforgiving hand.

Just look at their islands; barely a meter above sea-level and mostly relying on nature's mercy. To think that the leadership of such a vulnerable nation would be warm and friendly. But they are the biggest bigots in general and their PPM is the worst of its kind.

India provided 30 Million USD to the welfare of Palestinian.-ANI

Ps- Waste of money. One of the failures of Modi Govt foreign policy. We voted atleast 2 times against israel. On Israel-palestinian issue, we should take neutral stand. Pales support pak.

2017, 2021...
this was part of de-hyphenation argument. at that time GoI was arguing for world(read west) to de-hyphenate India-pak, so it was needed to show that de-hyphenation is possible, as in israel-palestine will have independent policy focus without one effecting the other.

@ezsasa let's see, if GOI take what stand in any future votes in UN. Still aid to palestinian is waste.
if the americans had thought giving "green revolution" to India was a "waste", knowing fully well about India's geopolitical leanings at that time, India's path would have been even more difficult.

anyways, diplomacy is not about personal opinions.

time is worth investing in find out why GoI does XYZ, there will always be a history. it's better to first find out what it is, before judging on what it is not.

anyways there has to be some difference between Indian foreign policy and paki foreign policy, paki foreign policy revolves around "muslim mumalik". our's don't.

Watch out for 5 Eyes Intelligence gathering network. Its electronic and human intelligence even during peacetime can upset the apple cart, as it did in US-Canada-India triangle. On half cooked electronic intercepts, it resulted in a diplomatic fight which will be hard to repair.

Blame it on 5 Eyes gathered intercepts. These are not evidence but enough to start a public displeasure between nations. On the other hand this public fight is to be welcomed. First, it opened the can of worms of 5 Eyes Nations gathering information about everybody including non Anglo - Saxon nations. If anybody did not know, it knows it now. Second, the fight has humbled Canada. The four other nations of the group did not wish to pick up a fight with an important ally in the East for a mere terrorist shooting, who was in constant contact with the Canadian intelligence raising doubts about truthfulness of the Canadian charge. The terrorist in question has lied his way around to gain entry into Canada and obtain citizenship. Hence a doubtful case.

As an ally, the US did it could do the most as at Canadian insistence, it brought up the subject matter with India but nothing more. The experienced international analysts on the subject matter advised Canada to cool it. Nothing is proven. There is no smoking gun. If the Indians did it then they are too damn smart to talk upon an open lines knowing fully well that America is listening. It is not worth pursuing.

In Canada, the terrorists who were prospering have got a shock. With the whole subject now in the open, Canadian support will vanish. Otherwise, it is very difficult for Canada to deny that they have nothing to do with terrorists under the pretext “freedom of expression”. It is open that Sikh members of Canadian parliament and the Sikh leader of the NDP party played a big role in this diplomatic tussle.

Trudeau, the Canadian Prime minister is doing his best to sweep it under the rug. He is caught between rock and hard place.

Some of the western nations want to play sub-nationalism agenda by directly engaging with States/Regional parties in India.

Good, Modi Govt in the name of "parity" asked Canada to withdraw atleast a dozen diplomats.

Will serve as a Warning to others.
I really think that we should also ramp up sub-national cards in both the Anglo countries and start engaging with the conservative provincial governments in both the US and Canada. There are several states that don't associate with either Biden's policies or that of Trudeau's - case and point, Alberta in Canada and Texas in the US.

They want to do business and we should expand our outreach to them, even encourage the good Indian diaspora there to vote in their favor in exchange for good deals. It's an easy game to use trade and gain influence. No harm done and both sides get stuff. Once we start showing a couple of upsets, they will know not to cross lines.

The Five Eyes Alliance and the Landscape of Global Surveillance

The Five Eyes surveillance alliance remains enigmatic to much of the global community, rarely receiving significant media coverage. Originating as a signal intelligence cooperation after World War II, its inception was to collaborate and analyze collected signal data. Throughout the Cold War, this alliance evolved into a pivotal foreign policy instrument. Five English-speaking nations – the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand – prioritized this intelligence sharing to thwart potential global conflicts or preemptively address terror threats. Though successful in some respects against the Soviet Union, the Five Eyes network couldn't prevent incidents like 9/11 or numerous terror attacks across Europe and Asia.

Often referred to as the 'International Spy Network' both today and during the Cold War era, at its core, the Five Eyes focuses on electronic surveillance. This includes intercepting local and satellite communications, supplemented by human intelligence. Trillions of these intercepts, predominantly from US-NSA archives, are analyzed using advanced computing systems. These supercomputers sift through vast amounts of data to identify key pieces of information, which are often encrypted. The NSA employs a team of tech-savvy individuals who specialize in cryptographic analysis to decode these transmissions, making them comprehensible within minutes.

The reach of the US-NSA is vast: from monitoring phone calls, reading messages, capturing images, accessing emails, to exploiting electronic backdoors for data retrieval. Edward Snowden's revelations underscored the extent of this reach, emphasizing that even a switched-off phone isn’t immune to data extraction. Specialized NSA units can infiltrate global computer systems and even tamper with shipped electronics targeting specific individuals or organizations.

Despite its intricate web of surveillance, the Five Eyes failed to prevent significant terrorist attacks, including the tragic events of 9/11 in New York. Such failures highlight that Osama Bin Laden cleverly evaded electronic detection, relying less on technology and more on human communication. This underscores the importance of complementing electronic surveillance with human intelligence.

It's worth noting that the Mumbai terror attack (26/11) did not go unnoticed by the alliance. Advance information was provided to India, yet it was met with insufficient urgency by Indian officials.

In another instance, electronic intercepts captured staff from the Indian Consulate discussing Hardeep Nijjar’s incident in Vancouver. This information was passed to Canada, leading to diplomatic tensions. India contested the credibility and admissibility of these intercepts as evidence, which subdued the diplomatic dispute.

It’s likely that India was aware of potential electronic eavesdropping. Though they might have relied on encoded communications, it's possible the NSA decoded them, or they were simply low-level communications with little significance.

To simplify, the NSA's interception in this case escalated a diplomatic situation over an event that might not warrant such tension. This strained relationship highlights that even with sophisticated tools, the broader implications of intelligence activities can sometimes be overlooked.

Awful article, devoid of anything like heart and soul. Approvingly quotes some ' liberal' critical commentary about India in the Financial Times, without asking the counter question, " would the Western countries have close ties with Pakistan, Saudi, El Salvador, Zaire, and massive trade with China? Would they have Portugal in NATO in 1961 occupying Goa, and being under a dictatorshi'. India is in Africa historically for trade, counter balancing China is not the only reason. India's long term intention is to help build up the African countries, so to have more mutually beneficial relations. To create interdependence, that runs parallel to India's ties with the West. Too much green in this article, not enough blue, or any blue.
