Ford annually sells 1,000,000 cars in China. In Japan, only 3,000.

Japan is home to some of the world leaders in Automobile sector... So its Natural that the US auto majors will not be able to make breakthroughs in Japan... Sor instance the GM sells around 2.5 Million vehicles in China every year... that is even more than what they sell in the USA... The VW sells even more than what GM sells in China... Also the Chinese have one particular trait, they like big cars with acres of space inside...

So there is nothing to compare the American auto major presence in China with that of Japan... Japan is home to top calss OEM's whereas China is still a infant when it comes to the domestic Automobie industry, which ofcourse is also dominated by the western players...

one simple example on why the US and europeans dominate the Chinese market, just compare the sales figures of Chevrolet Cruze in India and in china... In India the annual sales of that model lingers around 1500... whereas the same model sells around 250,000 cars per year... And compare that with the Suzuki's Swift platform!!! it sells around 400,000 cars in India (combined figures of Swift and Swift dezire)...

the Chinese have the money and craze for large cars...

Wow! Americans are making heaps of money from the Chinese pockets, nice.

Japan in contrast has a much better, much more refined domestic automobile industry, so they do not need to look at alternatives.

US-Japan annual trade is worth over $200B, and the US-PRC annual trade is worth over $500B. With China, the trade deficit is worth over $300B, and with Japan a mere $75B, which means for every dollar of export to Japan, the US imports 2 dollars worth of goods, where as in case of China for every dollar of export, the US imports 4 dollars worth of goods and services, now looking at that trade imbalance, hugely lop-sided in favour of the Chinese, Americans are not going to be a happy lot, or are they?!

Anyway, and as I have said before, get over with the misconception that the west will be all too good with the bad boy just because there are good trade relations, not to forget how much the west can still manipulate the economic situation in China.

that's because the Japanese have their own car manufacturers and the quality and pricing of their domestically made vehicles are very competitive

India's Tata Jaguar Land Rover is also doing very well in the open Chinese car market.

China is producing 25% of cars in the world. But foreign brands catches 50%-60% of our market.

On anther hand, those foreign car makers booted the local economy (jobs, steel, parts, equipments,Industrial robot, etc)
