The liberal, progressive attitude found in the region was unmatched anywhere else in the Islamic world. The Tajik and Uzbek SSRs may have once bordered Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, but the differences between the two could not have been starker. From an Indian standpoint, it is truly a shame to see the collapse of Soviet power in Central Asia; it is not in our interests to see a surge of Islamic fundamentalism in the region, as has been happening since the 90s.
