RAWALPINDI: In an unprecedented move, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif dismissed 12 army officers from over charges of corruption on Thursday, military sources said.

Five brigadiers, three colonels and a major general are among those dismissed by the army chief, DawnNews reported.

There has been no official confirmation regarding the incident.

The development comes two days after the COAS said "across the board accountability is necessary for the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of Pakistan", adding that the war against terror cannot be won unless "the menace of corruption is uprooted".

Gen Raheel said "Pakistan’s Armed Forces will fully support every meaningful effort in that direction which would ensure a better future for our next generations."

The army chief's call for across-the-board accountability comes as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is embroiled in the explosive Panama Papers which count his family among other global political elite with undeclared offshore assets.

Opposition leaders have demanded a probe into the scandal, with some calling for the PM to step down.

Quarters close to the PM’s Office say PM Nawaz is determined to have his three children cleared of accusations of money laundering and tax evasion in the aftermath of Panama Papers leak.

Defence analyst Hassan Askari while speaking to DawnNews said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the Federal Investigation Agency and other agencies will be pressed to take similar action regarding bureaucracy.

The army chief's actions will have repercussions for civilian institutions and corrupt politicians under the microscope would be probed transparently.

Security analyst Talat Masood while speaking to DawnNews said the Army chief has "set an example for politicians to follow" and the decision would "build pressure on politicians as well as the judiciary to root out corruption".

"This decision has come at a time when certain sections were apprehensive about the involvement of Pakistan Army in civilian matters," Masood

"Accountability per se is not a political issue, but then the national conversation at the moment is about the excesses of elected leaders. Perhaps a better way to interject itself into that conversation would have been for the military to start the so-called across-the-board accountability process itself.

Surely in offering the military to greater financial scrutiny, a positive example would be set that politicians would be under legitimate pressure to follow.

Yet, where the military errs, the political class inflicts damage on itself — and the wider cause of democracy."

Just dismissed them without giving them any punishments! :D Pakistan army haven't even revealed what type and amount of corruption they did. Typical pakistan saving its army officers by just doing lip service and to trap Nawaz sharif to resign after panama leak thing. hope they are not planning to take over once again.

They may not have paid Raheel sharif's share in time. They should have kept him happy.

Transparency, integrity, fairness - these words have no meaning in Pakistan.

I think dismissed without court martial or judicial process.

It can be anything, even as little as internal politics of Pakistani army.

You cannot take anything from Pakistan at face value where speaking lies is fashionable. A country of sheik chilli.

Anyone read this? Do so if you haven't already...It's a blockbuster!

Ayesha Siddiqa's book covers a major gap in the literature on contemporary Pakistan. For many years journalists and other analysts, on the basis of anacdotal evidence, have remarked that Pakistan's military has a major interest in the economy. Military Inc. is the first serious attempt to provide some facts and figures to substantiate that claim.

This bold book explains why it will be so difficult to persuade the Pakistani military to renounce political power and return to the barracks. Dr. Siddiqa shows in great detail how the economic benefits that military officers can obtain when in or close to the seat of power stimulate them to solidify their political position in order to retain and expand those economic benefits.

This book is a vital piece of the complex puzzle as to why the Pakistan army have become so powerful. Complex, riveting, absorbing, Siddiqa has written a vitally important book which enhances our understanding of the army on the front line in the war on terror. Siddiqa provides us with the first understanding of the workings of one the most secretive armies in the world.

An incisive look at the largely hidden economic empire run by and for the benefit of Pakistan's military. This courageous book will not please Pakistan's generals. But no Pakistani, civilian or military, can afford to ignore its sobering analysis.

People will cheer also run on to streets openly welcome paki army for their no corruption policy and make Pakistan corruption free direction. Paki Anna Hazare !!

Also all the above paki army personnel will go and train kasabs and be non state actors.

Finally when Pakistan feels that they want to complain against paki army ... Oh wait ... Wasn't that why benazir was assassination. And wait why musharraf gave up seat ... And wait why last army chief playing golf now only.

The fear that the people of Pakistan will turn against the army ( it was extremely close last time )

War on terror still alive and Pakistan economic state is worn down because of paki army. Paki army cheif drives BMW shhhhh. This army chief is only trying to get a extension ... He would be most stupid if he takes over. It would be beginning of end of Pakistan . I would more worry about PM nawaz health and safety ... And more chance army chief being a interim leader until proper elections ... Not a coup

The paki army needs to regain the esteem and popularity that it is fully lacking ... Fine line between ... Too much loose it all ... Too little loose it all.

Even Kashmir has a army for support but its elections and developments can be labelled better to pakistan to many extent . for one a woman is leader of the state. Will pakis see and learn ... That india union has proper self determination and better and better each day and continued prosperity

Will Pakistan learn that its problems are all and only due to the Paki Army ...

Raheel Shareef has an impeccable reputation and he's doing much better than our civil govt. He didn't even spare the rotten eggs within the army. It shows courage and true patriotism.
