@marrakesh, is this the real reason for your sudden interest in Karelia?

Karelia is the last of the Russian opposition mayor - now Putin's supporters are trying to smoke him out
Opposition noisy street demonstrations, open to the media war and businessmen from the opposition ranks. Russian Karelia, seething in a way that has been exceptional in Russia after the Crimean conquest.

The mayor Galina Širšina, 36, sits in his office in Petrozavodsk run-down city hall and smiles as if he would not be at the center of a political storm. Russia's last opposition mayor of the window overlooking the windy Lake Onega.

"I do not count the days. However, town councilors have already openly talking about the premature resignation."

"I'm not afraid. As long as I am given time, as long as I work for the benefit of our city."

The opposition party Yabloko activist Gadirov Gadir shared the Director of the Republic of Karelia Alexander Hudilaisen difference demanding slips of paper in June in Petrozavodsk. The police came to the scene to oust him.

Pressures around Širšinan are constantly increasing. His supporters sitting in pre-trial detention and under house arrest on charges of economic crimes. Opposition says suspicions are political.

Some of the accused or their representatives who agree to speak only nimettä, others have been intimidated to silence entirely.

The mayor's main sponsor and the opposition party Yabloko local leader Vasily Popov was forced to flee to Finland

19 Finns you say?
Official population census in Karelia:
1939 - 8322 Finns
1959 - 27829 Finns
You are talking about Russian Karelians who are ethnic Finns. They have lived in Russia for centuries. I am talking of Finnish citizen who were all evacuated when armistice was made in 1944. Soviet Union got empty land with only 19 people in there.

And why the number of people was tripled? Women give birth over 20 years?
Or, finnish historians shame to recognize that not everyone wanted to move?

They are propably ethnic Finns from other areas around Piter who moved there after the war.I cannot believe that 20000 stayed. Official figures are 430000 moved and 19 stayed.

You have interesting visions about our history. It would be interesting to know what they actually teach in Russia.

As crazy as it sounds, Russians actually believe this BS. Less than 15% of them has foreign passport, very few speak foreign languages, they watch day after day government controlled tv and absorve everything.

We live interesting times....
Is that a Chinese curse or blessing :)

It's frightening the propaganda they believe and as for quoting Sputnik or Global Security ....

Anyway, as you've said, Finland has spanked them repeatedly in the last century and will do again if puny Putin tries it again

No wonder all those Warsaw Pact States looked West after '89/91

Actually the big picture is not black and white. Russians are wonderful and friendly people. Putin has raised their self esteem sky high. Many of my best friends are Russian.

We Finns are pragmatic and take good with the bad and can also hopefully differentiate between ordinary people and state politics.

Some wise man said once that you cannot understand Russia, you can only believe in her...

Look at EU, schengen free travel area, common currency and wide use of english language has made war in western Europe practically impossible.

The cultural divide between Russia/ EU is still too big. Of course one reason is that Russia ( and Ukraine ) has no tradition in democracy. Europe and Russia just do not speak the same language. Culturally. Russia is collective society and western Europe is individualistic society.

It's not the Russians per se, it's the 'Muscovite Mentality' victimhood, sense of entitlement, control of the proletariat etc

As a wise man once said Russia is an enigma wrapped up in a riddle

Cultural gap must be That the social gap with Europe should be absent. You listed all the factors that were in the USSR too. However, the USSR was a big social gap even with the countries of Eastern Europe.

USSR was just military empire...it had nothing to do with union as such. Russian politics in Eastern Europe and Ukraine were imperialistic.

I will defend the Soviet Union. It was not a military Empire. However, it was ruled by a very bad economists. The problem of the USSR was of rigidity of the Politburo.
What was imperialism? My parents received free higher education, an apartment, bought a car. The UkrSSR was technically and technologically developed country. Ukraine (UkrSSR) for their money back your life in the Crimea. I repeat. Socialist economy is much worse than capitalist. At this stage of history.

I don't want to return to the Soviet Union!

P.S.
You're talking from the perspective of geopolitics, but try to put yourself in the place of an ordinary man.

I wonder what happenes to Ukraine and Russia in the future. Ukraine is relatively poor country and if Russian oil money dries up Russia is equally poor.

US and EU are negotiating TTIP to make them competitive against China. What is the role of Russia and Ukraine in this big picture. Are you strangling yourself to death. Russia destabilizes Ukraine and by doing that also hurts itself.

I am putting myself to the place of ordinary man. Some of my friends in Russia have higher education, they work really hard, but their salaries are so small that building for the future is really hard. They live in "great russia" but their standard of living is forty years behind ours...

You're talking about modern relationships and not about the USSR. Now Russia is an aggressive countre that was back in the 30-ies of the last century. It's a hell of a mixture consisting of business, the Orthodox religion, foreign policy.
Salary is conditional. Probably better to buy a bottle of beer for 50 cents than 2.5 Euro in Europe.

Yes, I do. I always correct grammatical and other mistakes. You should also correct your grammatical mistakes, if not your flawed beliefs. An ellipsis should have only three dots. :cool1:
A spelling nazi as well as a real one. Oh well, take comfort in your supposed superiority ;-)

Edit: Anyway, you added two whole sentences, not edited for spelling :cool1:

BBC rarely corrects its mistakes. Even that reporter from BBC at the MH-17 crash site and interviewed the locals was initially put up on BBC but later takes down. So much for freedom of speech.
Was it? Source?

When is NYT going to correct their fairly tales about those aluminium tubes of that Michael Gordon? :pound:
Dunno, you tell me. Not followed that story. As you're in America I assume it's news to you
