This pro Pakistan policy will ultimately damage India US relationship even further.
What Americans are doing is they are openly arming our no 1 enemy that too directly and completely free. This is different from India simply doing business with their enemy. Imagine if India starts servicing Russian Sukhois free of cost. How would US feel? well that's exactly what US is doing with Pakistan.
If India US relationship deteriorates, it won't be the first time. India isn't a type of country that will compromise on its sovereignty. Americans are too arrogant to understand this. Their usual carrot and stick approch always fails in Indian context.
In the end Americans will get another 9/11 type gift from their pet dog as it has given them in past. To Americans I want to say, You reap what you sow.
It is not the 1950s or 1960s anymore, the cost of propping up Pakistan and keeping the rickety dingy afloat has exponentially increased since then. What is it Pakistan can offer ? Their value the last 20 years was to pretend to "fight" terrorism and provide a logistics and intelligence hub to the US when the US was fighting the taliban. With war in Afghanistan over, there is nothing of value that Pakistan can offer the US. Sure, it is a country of over 250 million (probably 300 m by now) people, but these hundreds of millions are not productive consumers or skilled workers, they are illiterate, drunk on religion, violent bigots. Other than trying to needle India, Pakistan can provide no other service. Even in the highly unlikely scenario of a direct war between US and Iran, US has other options for logistics than an unreliable, two-faced Pakistan.
Years ago while attending an informal seminar where Rajiv Malhotraji was speaking, he compared the behavior of US towards India to that of a mother-in-law ! A mother-in-law does not want to lose control over her offspring, so she will inject periodic stress and tension into the relationship to keep the pot boiling, but she does not want to do anything so haphazardly that may damage the marriage!
Make no mistakes about it, after creating the highly capitalist China and then watch it grow uncontrollably industrialized, rich and militarized, US will not make the same mistake again. If they see India grow stronger, wealthier and more militarized, then they will do their darnest to cut us few inches ! But they also realize that India presents them 1.4 billion upwardly mobile consumers, international students and millions of skilled workers. India also is the most viable counter against China, and the only one in scale and size that can potentially challenge the Chinese. They will not jeopardize this relationship beyond a certain point, we are too tightly intertwined for that.
