Finland will buy F-35

I would have been shocked had they chosen a European jet. Western Europe with the exception of the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy & Sweden every other Western European country has to buy American jets as a part of the NATO alliance.

Finland is not a NATO member like Switzerland. But neither is UAE or the Saudis who all want to buy F-35 but at the moment are bot allowed to buy.

As I said before, those who can afford but cannot buy the F-35 will go for Rafale, of SH, or EF, or F-16, or Gripen...

This is how the best fighter survived: there was a full-scale “battle” in the war games
The HX tender culminated in a war game in which the final fighter candidates were tested in collaboration with the Army and Navy.
The F-35 scored 4.47 points in the performance comparison and the second-time fighter 3.81 points. The requirement was 4 points. The maximum score was 5 points.

Actually, it is. The term is "NATO Enhanced Opportunities Partner". Which is in a way, NATO's ally.

Here:

U.S. Relations With Finland

The Finns have stopped buying Russian weapons, which they did during the Cold War as a compromise to show neutrality between the two countries. Since 2013, Finland is involved in almost all war-games by the NATO allies in the northern hemisphere.

When you have a direct border with Russia and you are that close NATO, then consider that you are a shadow-agent of NATO. Otherwise, there is nothing that stops Russians from taking over Finland as well like they are planning with Ukraine (Though Ukraine is more of a personal-cultural thing for the Russians).

The reason why Finland is going for F-35 is because it is a NATO partner. Period.

NATO is not obligated to defend Finland under Art. 5 (attack on 1 is attack on all). Ukraine too is a NATO partner.

And as to F-35's advantage over Rafale and all other non-5th gen competitors, has been validated over and over again. Frankly it has become so boring.

The fact is everyone will go for F-35 if given the chance. But not all can afford it, and not all who can afford it can buy it.

United Arab Emirates Threatens to Pull Out of $23 Billion F-35, Drone Deal With U.S.

“The U.A.E. has informed the U.S. that it will suspend discussions to acquire the F-35,” a U.A.E. official said in a statement. “Technical requirements, sovereign operational restrictions, and the cost/benefit analysis led to the reassessment.”

The USAF Plant 4 in Fort Worth will celebrate its 80th anniversary next April. Dubbed the "fighter factory" the Lockheed Martin operated plant currently produces all three variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Here's a view from the floor from May 2021.

UAE Freezes F-35 Purchase Talks, Washington Says End-user Requirements Nonnegotiable
We will always insist, as a matter of statutory requirements and policy, on a variety of end-user requirements. That's typical. And these end-user requirements and protection of U.S. defense equipment are universal, nonnegotiable and not specific to the UAE.”

The US is not desperate to sell F-35 like some other cou try on their older fighter. Indeed, not all can afford it and not all who can afford it can buy it.
