JUST IN: Program Leader Says High Costs Pose ‘Existential Threat’ to F-35
“I see high costs as an existential threat to the F-35 as an enterprise. And that cost happens not just in development, not just in production, but in sustainment as well.”

even for USAF.... now imagine Belgium, Netherlands, and some others.... a pity !

Rep. Adam Smith is challenging national security orthodoxy: He says Congress should no longer lavish funds on Lockheed Martin Corp.’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The chair of the House Armed Services Committee has had enough of the most expensive program in the Pentagon’s history and wants to stop throwing money down “that particular rathole,” as he called it. The stealthy fighter aircraft has yet to reach its full capabilities, its engine breaks down more quickly and takes more time to fix than anticipated. The cost to sustain the F-35 fleets is “crazy high,” Smith said in an interview.

“It is an incredibly capable aircraft,” Smith said. “It is also an incredibly expensive aircraft and one of questionable reliability. Most of our national defense plan was built around the idea that we would have a more capable aircraft than we have right now, and that it would cost less.” As a result, Smith said, “we are going to be very reluctant to buy more.”

They should have gone for something different ,but this is their biggest blunder , a jet so futuristic but with so many shortcomings
US has lost the brains and discretion, anyone that is critical and objective is most likely fired in US based companies now. Recently a 4 star was fired on some woke shit....Bon is right, 35 and 22 are lemons and white elephants regardless of capabilities...heading the way of USSR if you ask me unfortunately

f-22 is an air superiority fighter.
f-35 is a multirole combat aircraft.
f-22 can't do ground strikes. f-35 can.

but the fact is both f-22 and f-35 are flying lemons that create holes in USAF pockets.
f22 wont have been a lemon if they went ahead with it.they stopped production, ordered small amount which further led to costs per plane skyrocketting and this also killed any further development of the aircraft type. This was due to the inherently stupid idea of 'the right side of history' which led to the belief in the 'freedom dividend',that is, because soviet union fell due to financial instability, there will be no rival to us power and that usa will sail into the sunset as a hero liked by eveyone and there is no human nature and everything will be hunky dory.

they should have went ahead full steam on f22 production, induction and further development.the plane and the program is not inherently flawed.

the f35 though was to be multipurpose, but the program was completely bad and reminds me of the stupid naval acquisition programs like lca, ford class, zumwalt with cost overruns and other issues.the plane also is burdened by the B model causing unnecessary complexity.

this is important lesson for us on how a defence acquisition can be screwed up even after a good military industrial complex has been set up.how internal politics characteristics of democracies can screw up defence preparedness.so dont think you are out of the woods yet.the french and israeli defence set up should be the aim for us.they for some reason produce less wastage in money spent to product gained ratio.

NOW I KNOW WHY USA NEEDS SUCH A LARGE BUDGET,IT NEEDS IT TO BALANCE OUT ITS OWN STUPID DECISIONS.

F22 was a beast. A real air dominant.
F35 is made of too many compromises (especially the B) : it is average in everything except as a communication node and high power radar platform. All things a more affordable UCAV can do now.
So a huge waste of money.

They should have made 2 variants of f22, one with a bit less of stealth but more armament capacity but F-22 had lot of lingering issues for years from oxygen to coating issues and my guess is they were deep issues that could not be addressed easily?

F-35 is simply the most advanced multirole fighter currently in service. It will dominate current and future battlefields.

The only problem with it right now is sustainment cost, but which is being resolved and will be resolved given the commitment of the US and partners. Already, F-35 at less than $80M fly away cost (for the A model) is so much bang for the buck since at this price level it's even cheaper than some generational oldies 4th and 4.5th gen fighters.

Here's a good video on its unique EOTS, just one of its highly advanced sensors:

You are an optimist, but all signs are that it will not gain more enhancements that require tons of money. Both military and congress are indicating that.....it is a good plane but just can't seem to increase odds of US superiority against its primary foe's considering the money and time that got pumped into it....against 3rd world it will shine for sure. Hopefully they can leverage a lot of what came out into the next gen to keep costs and time optimal

These are birth pains, F-15 was long ridiculed for being too expensive in its time, F-16 was also heavily criticized in its inception due to lots of technical issues. The fact is that F-35's situational awareness and penetrating capability and networking puts it far ahead of its current or soon to be operational potential foes. The F-35 fits perfectly into the so called "overmatch" requirement of the Americans.

Gaza Conflict Casts Shadow over F-35 Jet Sale to UAE, Qatar

The United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s $23 billion proposal to buy 50 F-35 fighter jets, MQ-9B attack drones, missiles and bombs– which some American lawmakers want scrapped, could face even greater opposition as cries to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge grow louder following the Gaza conflict.

Good.

Nah, F15 and f16 are not even close dollar to dollar and different America back then and different world, mistakes are more tolerable at the time and China was nonfactor, US simply does not have the same lb to lb muscle financial or tech anymore. Best outcome would be to focus on cost optimal 6th gen design and philosophy and not go for space age and leverage as much from f35 investments.....F-35 has some great aspects but overall its B- at best...I like it personally but it also impacted the USAF development overall in somewhat negative way

NO. F22 can make air to ground mission. With SDB and JDAM. Not a perfect tool to do so, but may be usefull.
does it have a dedicated surface detection radar or just the standard AESA radar turned towards ground to produce low resolution tracking of ground targets?

if its the second case, its pretty much a lemon for ground attack role.

why use 5 th gen pocket burning machine when going for ground attack. also its structure & body is said to be fragile than a woman's heart. :troll:

a couple 7.62 mm rounds from AK series and its done.

Lol, its a fast flying plane and no ak or manpad can take it out but gps guided missiles are good enough without a dedicate radar

if its flying low enough, it can be destroyed very easily.

they just made it possible for F-22 to fire SD bombs and JDA munitions just in case.

but the fact is it will never be used for ground attack role.

Wait what!? WTH is a surface detection radar? All this time I thought SAR or GMTI modes in an AESA are good enough. What is the difference?
