Test Flight Confirms Suitability of Latest Raytheon AESA for International Legacy Hornet Upgrades

Successful flight test of the Raytheon-built APG-79(V)X AESA radar system has demonstrated the functions needed to extend the combat relevance of F/A-18C/D Hornet aircraft for 15 to 20 years. Hornet fleets upgrading to the new APG-79V(X) radar will receive Super Hornet-like capabilities, including: extended detection ranges, simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, production of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mapping, industry leading reliability.

"We put our latest AESA radar to the test, and it exceeded our expectations," said Mike "Ponch" Garcia, business development director of Tactical Airborne Systems for Raytheon's Space and Airborne Systems business, and a former F/A-18E/F Super Hornet pilot/instructor. "Our APG-79(V)X combines the best features of our AESA portfolio to maintain tactical advantage for F/A-18C/D aircraft."

Since fielding the world's first operational AESA radar for airborne platforms in 2000, Raytheon has delivered more than 500 tactical AESA radars for F-15, F/A-18E/F, EA-18G and B-2 aircraft. The APG-79 system, a U.S. Navy program of record, flies globally on F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers, and has seen service in four combat theaters since its first delivery in 2006.

"Our experience with AESA radar systems ensures a low-risk transition to the APG-79V(X). Installations require less than 60 minutes," said Roy Azevedo, vice president for Raytheon's Space and Airborne Systems business. "In these uncertain economic times, when defense budgets are particularly tight, Raytheon's APG-79V(X) radar offers a proven, cost-effective solution for Hornet life extension, as well as significant opportunities for in-country manufacturing partnerships.

F 18 Advance Super Hornet
What is specially "advance" ? Radar? Not new. A very good one, but not new.
Stealth container? OK, but all the rest is not !
Flight agility? best than F35, but under first gen F18. It's a pathetic dog fight plane. Heavy but without a high t/w ratio....

Why do you think it has only one export customer? and for just 24 number.... despite the power of Uncle SAM....

Don't forget it came as a second league solution after the A12 avenger, killed in egg, as an attack fighter, not a fighter.

It's an attack fighter able to lauched AMRAAM

Dassault owned a subsidiary in Belgium, and they produced parts of Mirage in it !
US only gave crumb as ToT. style "produced this left landing gear door" or "that right leading edge"....
Well at least they got what's they signed for, with french they would have gone back to reviewing agreement every now and then.

What is specially "advance" ? Radar? Not new. A very good one, but not new.

* 50% reduction in frontal radar cross-section (RCS),
* CFT. It has 1297 kms of combat radius.
* EWPs.
* Next generation Jammer.
* New variant engine. Which is lighter in weight and more in thrust.

And sir, why you cry for radar..........?

French started in it in 2012.
They already got it fitted it in 2009.
In-fact, French are late.

US are the best in AESA. But the SH radar is not so new.

France is late, yes. The second is always late .... but a silver medal is not soo bad.

We are not speaking of India only. Only one foreign customer for a mature US plane.... poor in fact.

50% reduction? versus what? Brazil flight test for FX2 showed SH18 the less stealthier of the 3 competitors.
Sir, first you asked about Advanced Super Hornet, which is block 3 aircraft.
Now in this post, you are talking about F/A-18 block 2 aircraft.
That is the difference.

Rafale deal runs into hurdle again

ndia and France are still negotiating the latter’s offer in terms of New Delhi’s offset clause regarding the multi-billion dollar deal to purchase 36 French Rafale aircraft.

Talking to FE on condition of anonymity, highly placed sources said: “The French company Dassault Aviation has offered 17-18 technologies as part of its offsets obligation in various sectors, including civil aviation, homeland security and partially services for the deal which is being negotiated under DPP-2013.”

However, this could create further delay in the process as the ministry of defence (MoD) has so far failed to form a team to evaluate the respective proposals made by vendors for the transfer of technology. The methodology for evaluating and comparing the value of the respective proposals for transfer of technology also remains unformulated and unclear, sources revealed.

This process is expected to be time-consuming as there are no parameters that can be referred to while putting a cost to the technologies being offered. Earlier, the French side had rejected India’s demand for a 50% offset clause, citing sharp cost escalation, but offered to participate in ‘Make in India’ projects to carry forward the talks. There is also a strong lobby of small and medium French enterprises that is against industrial offsets and sees it as a threat to the competitiveness of the French defence industry.

Due to India’s insistence on the offset clause, tweaking of weaponry technology and plans to set up two bases for Rafale fighter planes would lead to cost escalation, which New Delhi is pushing to bring down to around 7-8 billion euro. “While the government is keen to bring down the costs of the aircraft to as low as euro 7-8 billion, there is no way France will give a fully loaded aircraft at that price. India might be forced to then pay just for the platform and for add-ons pay extra money,” a senior official explained.

Offset policy was first introduced as part of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), 2005, under which a foreign company has to invest back a portion of the deal into India.

Sir, first you asked about Advanced Super Hornet, which is block 3 aircraft.
Now in this post, you are talking about F/A-18 block 2 aircraft.
That is the difference.
What changed with "advanced" version? Stealth containers? OK. Conformal tanks? OK. and it's over. The plane itself remain less stealthy.
