No more 114mm gun in the Royal Navy ?
Oto Melara and Babcock International Group's Marine Division have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to offer the Oto Melara 127mm64cal Light Weight (LW) to the UK Ministry of Defence for the Type 26 frigate for the Royal Navy. Babcock would be the prime contractor to the MoD. The Oto Melara 127/64 LW gun is capable of firing up to 35 rounds per minute. The production turret weighs less than 29 tons and the gun uses an advanced ammunition handling system, consisting of four revolving drum magazines holding 56 ready-to-fire rounds. The new Vulcano ammunition is capable of precision engagement at ranges previously only achievable by missile systems but at a fraction of the cost

DCNS SMX-25 submarine
As it does at each Euronaval exhibition, DC NS presents its completed R&D projects, in this case the SMX-25 and the Advansea. The objective of the SMX-25 projectis to send a vessel, having the advantages both of a submarine and of a surface ship, into a theater of operations rapidly. Designed to operate on the surface at 38 knots (10 knots submerged), the SMX-25 has three gas turbines and three pumpjets. Carrying 16 missiles, 4 heavy torpedoes and machine guns, it can engage in surface as well as underwater combat, while using UU Vs or UA Vs. A vessel able to take into account constraints affecting land and littoral combat, it will carry, in addition to its 27 crew members, some ten special forces troops, with a displacement of 4,850 tons submerged and 2,850 tons surfaced. With a length of 109m (354 ft), quiet and stealthy in design, this vessel is capable of reconnaissance as well as combat or intelligence missions

http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=114402

Several innovations for this "future" (15 years) ship :
- "all electric" system, from gun (rail-gun) to propulsion (20 MegaWatts of electric power, quite huge for a 4000 tons ship) ; 28 knts speed foreseen
- use of supra-conductors
- use of new-gen electric batteries
- Energy control system (from propulsion and weaponry)
