I wonder how the rude treatment went about...

Something like :

Ecuador Official : Hola ! Can you make a dam for us good country ?
Chinese Official : Top song bong ! Wei aonly du dam work for countries with nice looking women. Yuu go tuu 'ell !
Ecuador Official : Yu slant eyed bastardos !

Didn't mean to screw up the thread, but I couldn't think of what we would have talked about anyway.

Strange case. I thought China was eager to invest in Africa and Latin America on any terms.

Ecuador would not provide mortgage China asked for and think China's ask is "too rude" ,because Ecuador think even IMF and west countries have never give such "strict and harsh offer"

Ecuador will not forget China's "mistreatment": president
AFP/File – Ecuador will not forget the "mistreatment" by China in failed talks to finance a hydroelectric …

Sat Mar 20, 4:20 pm ET
QUITO (AFP) – Ecuador will not forget the "mistreatment" by China in failed talks to finance a hydroelectric station, President Rafael Correa said Saturday, threatening to seek financing from Taiwan.
Correa said that he "unilaterally ended" talks on Wednesday with the Chinese bank Eximbank "due to the mistreatment and the rudeness" that the Ecuadoran negotiator endured.
"We will not forget this," Correa said in his weekly broadcast presentation.
Correa said that there were "many alternatives" to obtaining financing for the hydroelectric project, including from Taiwan.
"We have shown much solidarity towards China, supported the policy of one China, have supported China, but we will not forget how they treated us," said Correa.
Correa's leftist administration considered "unacceptable" China's conditions for a 1.7-billion-dollar loan to build the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant.
Eximbank had demanded that Ecuador's Central Bank put its assets up as collateral for the loan. "Never before," said Correa, had anyone made such requests, which in any case are forbidden by law.
If the Chinese "are going to treat us like another transnational corporation, with more rigor than the International Monetary Fund ... we will seek financing elsewhere. We are not going to surrender our sovereignty, even to a country as beloved as China," he said.
The comments came after Ecuador and China signed 4.7 billion dollars' worth of cooperation agreements in November during a visit by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

You seem to miss the blunder China has made here. Ecuador wanted a special relationship with China that includes special loan conditions. China doesn't have any problem giving tanks to Peru with no money down yet slaps Ecuador in the face with conditions they know go against their law. Now China has soured relations with Correa and China's influence in the region will diminish.

Just let the rude and silly prsident try other way. I am very interested whether he can get 1.7 billion USD loan from other country without any mortgage.

I enjoy the humor...... Let's leave Ecuador behind.......

In fact Ecuador should knock on Taiwan instead, who's interested in getting one more diplomatic tie. Mainland and Taiwan have been busy competing on that front for a long time.

A good 'gambler' may prefer to put chips on the one that's more likely to generate the biggest returns

After Pro-unity Ma Yingjiu was elected the president of Taiwan,Mainland CHina and Taiwan in fact reached the acquiescent diplomstic compromise .

Without the acquiescent diplomstic compromise from Mainland CHina, Taiwan would lose quite a lot "friendly states having diplomatic relations"

Taiwan now feel it very lucky and satisfactory to enjoy status quo,and they are not ready to break it.

Ecuador exports nearly half a million barrels of oil per day. It is nothing to joke about for an energy hungry country like China.

You will find Chinese mandarins pandering and massaging the ego of Ecuadorian president in the near future.

Yes, I think Beijing will reexamine their stance since Quito is too important a customer to lose. China already has $5 billion tied up in Ecuador in the past 2 years. If Correa started kicking out Chinese interests it would set back the Celestial Empire 30 years in progressive diplomancy in Latin America.

no permanent friendship but eternal interest...

that being said, international relationship is like doing business, quid pro quo, depending on what price 'Celestial Empire' has to pay for anticipated gains, at what risk (such as is return on investment guaranteed?). or perhaps China and Ecuador are in the process of bargaining.

Amigo: ............. take it or leave it, u gotta do biz here on my terms! our big brother Correa is angry and consequences very serious!

Mandarin: ....... what will we get in return for 1.7 billion USD loan wiithout any mortgage? oil? we're not your sole customer at all. Correa? will he be elected for the next term?

Amigo:......... . or I'll call my pal Taiwan. He's far more generous!

Mandarin: ....... Taiwan? that sly guy next door? go ahead.
