BBC News - Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

The Economist magazine has accused India of hostile censorship after being forced by the country's authorities to cover up a map in its latest edition.

India says the map, which depicts the disputed area of Kashmir, is incorrect because it shows the region as divided between Pakistan, India and China.

Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan in its entirety but has been divided since 1948.

It has been the cause of two wars between them.

Nearly 30,000 copies of the latest edition of The Economist are being distributed in India with a blank white sticker placed over a map of Kashmir.

The map was to be used to illustrate a cover story on the border between India and Pakistan which it describes as the world's "most dangerous".

Indian officials forced the magazine to take the step because the map did not show all of Kashmir as being part of India.

The Economist says it was merely reflecting the current effective border, adding that India is more intolerant on the issue than either Pakistan or China.

Indian readers, it said, could face the political reality of the situation on the ground unlike its government.

The authorities in India routinely target the international media, including the BBC, on the issue of Kashmir's borders if the media do not reflect India's claims.

All of the print media maps with Kashmir are censored these days.

Economist is trying to hype it in order to sell more copies not in India but in rest of South Asia.

PoK and CoK are a reality, and one must realize that. There has to be a convention on how to depict the map of J&K.
Frankly a lot of Indians are not aware of how large the territories of PoK and CoK are and how tiny Kashmir valley is as compared to Ladakh and Jammu etc.

pok and cok is reality but its also reality that kashmir is our land and any international media have to varify with our censuas and stand if they had to do busniss in India.
Its intermational norm to follow host country law and stand on matters related to them.

We don't need anybody's approval to say or to show Kashmir as an integral part of INDIA. Let the dogs bark what ever they want to bark. The entire international community knows the truth.

At some another forum a false flag Pakistani has started this thread with doctored heading. Anyhow the whole magazine should be banned if they are not going to be careful about India's official policy of Maps of India, specifically J&K. I can not see why the publisher of this wrong map shouldn't face legal charges. Let the freedom of speech/expression brigade cry nuts. Legality out-prefer technicality.

This has been part of policy of GOI for a very long time. If today we start allowing it to happen very slowly our claim on the Kashmir will be in question.

Let's for a second leave aside the fact that Kashmir is under dispute and divided among three parties, and the map depicted these disputed areas accurately. Similar maps have been in publication for years all over the world. But to think that the government of a country participates in something as idiotic as patching maps on magazine covers because it defies their point of view is laughable. Furthermore it bodes poorly upon the middle class of India who are obsessed with petty matters.

Unlike the grotesque images of Rajiv Gandhi's corpse, there is no law stating that the disputed regions of Kashmir cannot be depicted on magazine covers. This is purely an emotive response.

On whose authority did 'The Economist' confer upon itself the freedom to interpret indian laws. Its mighty foolish that such a prestigious publication with years of experience in dealing sensitive political matters makes such goof up and expects the govt to be parsimonious in its response. If foreign publications started deciding upon such matters, that are best left to the departments of the state, whats the point in having a sovereign govt.

The Government of India would do well not to listen to the views of those who don't understand the sensitivity of this issue. Kashmir can not and will not be depicted in any other way on Indian soil as our position on it, because that is, in this sub-continent and everywhere else, a legitimizing of the other's stance on the issue via a recognition of it as a dispute. The Indian government does not recognize Kashmir as a dispute, it recognizes it as an occupation of our soil by two foreign powers. There is no bickering, no here-and-there, no compromising, in any way, manner or form on the principal of territorial integrity of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Any body that does not understand the legal ramifications of this, can not recommend solutions to it. When I was young, I bought the World Book series of Encyclopedia and everywhere on 'Indian' maps in the book was stamped the disclaimer: that the external boundaries of India as depicted on the maps were neither authentic nor correct. That was, i thought, one of the best things this government ever did.
