After 15 years in the FFL I have retired and acquired a €1000 pension. I want to get feedback on what area of India €1000 a month can provide a middle class living and if it can even be had.

Hi ; seeing you after long time

1000 Euros would be 76000 ; it is going to be just sufficient

Rent alone would take minimum Fifteen to 20 thousand in decent neighborhoods in Big cities

Which city do you have in mind

Christians are safe in all cities

BUT Foreigners are safe ONLY in BIG cities

In small towns ; people would get on your nerves
and think you are a missonary ; Big trouble

Pondicherry has Many French people living
Former French colony

It is nice ; safe ; clean
I was also thinking about Pondicherry, or Goa or Kerala. Which is the best for standard of living on a fixed budget? I am not opposed to taking a BS part time job but I don't want to take work from Indians. I want my money to help the economy.

What is BS part time job

I really do not know whether your kind of work is
available in Goa ; Kerala or Pondicherry

Once you get working Visa or Business visa you can take any job

avoid working With tourist visa ; legal hassles

also find out about Tax liabilities

If your Pension is received in India and if you stay above
180 days in India ; you will have to pay Income Tax

Tourist visa - only six months stay

Business visa: require sponsorship by an Indian company and only valid for 1-5 years.

:confused1:

I currently make €800 a month doing ESL online. All I need is a stable internet connection. A BS job would be like telemarketing or something. No offence to those who do it but I tried it and hated it. A Business Visa sounds like the way to go. I have a few ideas for small business.

I was curious so was looking it put. A business visa requires sponsorship from an Indian company. A tourist visa on the other hand is valid for 10 years and just requires you to cross the border every six months like go to Nepal for a week? That could work.

Are they going to tax my money coming into India? The 1000 is what is left after deductions by the French state.

You better find out

Usually there are double taxation avoidance treaties
But whether they are also for Individuals ; dont know

Secondly for opening a bank account you will have to
also apply for a PAN CARD ; which you will get soon

That is a alpha numeric number for Tax purposes

Usually, no. France and India have a tax avoidance treaty. And a tourist is not a resident of India so wouldn't have to pay any tax.

@Armand2REP Kerala, Pondicherry and Goa are your best bets. 1000 Euro won't get you very far but if you are single you can live a pretty decent life.
For job, as a foreigner, look for it either here;

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliance_Française

Or here; http://in.one.un.org

Only French people I ever met worked for these two organization. One more thing, if you really have 15 years experience in FFL there would be plenty of private security agencies who could hire you as their White poster boy (no offense).

They probably don't even need a bank account and could use their French debit card/credit card and pay their rent in cash.
