‘Corporatisation’ was listed as one of the 167 transformational ideas to be implemented in the first 100 days after coming to power in the NDA’s manifesto for the 2019 general elections.

The delay in announcing the corporatising of 41 ordnance factories is understandable, given its antiquity and the powerful and entrenched unions that they have with 81,500 employees.

India’s military industry capability shows a sorry picture and the private sector is still not being treated as a partner in India’s quest for higher self-reliance. The much-hyped indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) is powered by a GE 404 engine from the US, while the radar is sourced from ELTA, Israel. The Kaveri engine development by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has been an unmitigated disaster. The Main Battle Tank (MBT), the showpiece indigenous tank, is powered by German MTU engines. Despite the significant hike in FDI, the inflow has only been $300 million from April to September 2020. This is largely due to the number of caveats for allowing 76% FDI.

The time to shed flab and inefficiency in defence PSUs and ordnance factories has come, rather than gloat over the corporatisation of the OFB.

Takes time to develop an Indigenous base. LCA and the subsequent aircrafts are a path for development of indigenous tech which will replace the Foriegn maal being brought in for development of our planes.

Only the the wire can call the LCA, in all of their smugness , a much "hyped" aircraft. They do not have the brains to understand the long term plan.

If we would have waited for LCA to be 100% Indian, it would have never been inducted.

The author is a babu who has served in MoD and also was being considered for position of HAL chairman at one point, though rejected for a more favourable candidate. Makes me wonder if babus really are the source of all that is wrong with MoD.

Babus sitting in the places they don't deserve at all is the source of all problems. A history graduate who has never seen a balance sheet in his life and has worked with the state admin for the most part of his career has no business sitting as a Director in a multi-billion dollar public sector company.

Here's another pic of DRDO Lakshya and Rustom 2 peeking in the corner.

Also, is it me or the Rustom 2 aka Tapas looks a bit slimmer with more aerodynamic body (look at that bulge). Okay it's clear that body has been clearly iterated to be slimmer, even the engines look at them.
