There are usually two types of orbits used by satellites.
Geostationary with height (altitude) around 36,000 km above the earth and
Low Earth orbit (around 500 km above the earth). There are other types of orbits also. But cloud cover is a barrier for satellites to get images. SAR satellites solve this problem. Like our RISAT satellites.

We can only guess about the usage of the MWIR sensor until we have more information.

We are already developing MWIR & LWIR payload for our sats.
Now this one mentioned by @porky_kicker is ground based system which would be second in line after space based asset in heat detection.
MWIR is generally used for clear imagery based on heat signature rather then detecting the temperature difference.

So it's vertical range? I think IRDE is developing hyperspectral payload but it's for different purpose.

May be for detection of ballistic missile launches during the boost phase or connected with our BMD program to detect reentry vehicles (warheads).
Can anybody reconfirm the range of this MWIR sensor at 1200 km.

Passive radar , does not emit signals , could be considered as a stealth radar. Detects targets by picking up reflections bouncing off aerial targets from FM / radio stations / cell towers and other signals emitters .

Saw an article that using only bounced FM ,passive radars can detect aircrafts over 250km with 500m accuracy.With digital audio/video 30km range and 10m accuracy

No moving parts,can detect stealth aircrafts as well.cannot be jammed.

Also looks like its made by thales UK . they have JV , bel-thales.

I guess S4 is headed for sea trials now.
There were reports that it would be launched nearer to the end of this uear for sea trials and be commissioned into the Navy by 2022.

It is used in ground based EOTS .

Civilian use include ISRO to track its rockets

Other than the use in test ranges, other military applications are obvious , but I don't have info on them .

I doubt it as of now , irst is still being developed , first let it come , then only best to think about eots for amca

It is being done as part of offset clause and how the fuck will it help us? We aren’t getting any of these aircrafts and these guys will manufacture in India at a cheaper rate and take back their jets with them and then say we fulfilled our offset clause.

I guess we should buy these aircrafts as well as our peacefool neighbour paxtan has bought 10 Emraer Lineage 1000 aircrafts countering P8Is of Indian Navy. We will have 12 MMAs while Paxtan will have 16 if they don’t retire their Orions or even if they do then they still will have 10 MMAs while we’ll be at 12, no doubt P8s are the best in the world in terms of their roles but still Paxtans choice is of quantity and quality as well, it may not be as capable as P8s but will cause considerable boost in their capabilities and the first Lineage 1000 has already landed in Karachi.

Any idea is drdo developing EOTS for AMCA.

The F35 EOTS system reportedly has a range exceeding 1300 km though the actual figure will be classified. It can detect multiple launches of ballistic missiles at the same time. Anyhow the information is only an estimate. Lockheed Martin has not given out any official specifications. The EOTS is part of the DAS(Distributed Architecture System) on board the F35.

Whether the Chinese have an equivalent on their J20 is unknown. Seriously doubt it.

Our AMCA is still at least a decade away. Have time to develop an indigenous EOTS. We are already working on an IRST. The LCA mk2/MWF will get the IRST first.
