Winds of change? DRDO wakes up from slumber; calls young troops to Hyderabad for an inspiring event

By Anantha Krishnan M
Express News Service
Hyderabad: Milking the reverse brain-drain syndrome and pushing the out-of-the-box-philosophies being propagated to keep the fresh blood in sterile condition, the think-tank of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is organising a three-day Young Scientists' Meet (YSM) in the land of nawabs and kebabs – Hyderabad. This first-of-its-kind-event will be held from December 18-20 at Ramoji Film City and at Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a DRDO facility.
It's hard to believe that DRDO has finally woken up from slumber and decided to brand its employees -- especially youngsters – with a feel-good get-together filled with freedom of expression. With the motto 'Together We Grow,' the YSM will give DRDO top-brass a rare insight into the minds of its younger troops. "You can't ignore them and they are DRDO's saviors. They hold the baton to the future and YSM is just the beginning of a series of new initiatives we are lining up," DRDO chief Dr V K Saraswat tells The New Indian Express.
So what will the young guns do at the backyard of Charminar? Well, for a change they will talk and their bosses will listen. They will chart out a trajectory for DRDO studded with new hopes and horizons. They will speak fearlessly. They will pick up the threads of sharing, bonding and self-belief. They will probably scream in unison: Yes, We can!
An idea mooted by the Human Resources Department at DRDO HQ in Delhi will finally take wing when close to 250 young scientists from various disciplines and from 52 labs will flock together sinking their designations, but soldering their desires. "We are confident that the event will be a smashing hit as we have never done something like this before. Scientists in the B,C and D levels will make use of this opportunity to display their inner might," says S.K. Ray, ..........................

This is the power of hope. One thing leads to another if success is achieved. Young generation of India is very much talented and needs a better platform to do R&D. If the trend continues, we can do more for self defense and humanity.

Development of Performance Enhancing Durgs by DRDO

07-December, 2011

Defence Institute of High Altitude Reasearch (DIHAR), Leh, a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has developed a unique herbal formulation "Performax" of ten important herbs known to have adaptogenic properties. Animal studies conducted showed nearly 36 percent increased physical performance during exposure to altitude simulating 25,000 ft. Human studies are being planned in collaboration with 153 GH.

The salient features of the developed drugs are:-

* The capsule has a calorific value of 211.8 C and is rich in adaptogens and antioxidants including vitamins.

* It is completely herbal with no toxic effect.

* It can be used as herbal prophylactic and dietary supplement.

Formulation could be used as a prophylactic to improve physical and mental performance of the troops deployed at high altitude and other stressful operational environments. It can improve respiratory, circulatory, nervous and hormonal functions to cope with higher levels of stress.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri N.K. Singh in Rajya Sabha today.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2011

The state-of-art technology center for design & development of world class Advance Navigation systems & Real-time Embedded computing products was inaugurated by Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India on 9th December 2011 (Friday), at RESEARCH CENTER IMARAT (RCI), the brain child of Dr. Kalam and the premier defence Avionic systems laboratory situated in the DRDO' s Missile complex in Hyderabad. The 'NAVIGATION & EMBEDDED COMPUTERS COMPLEX' which has been built over 14.5 acres within the premises of RCI, houses the most advanced design, fabrication & performance evaluation facilities required for the development of all classes of Navigation sensors & systems and real-time embedded systems. The Inertial Navigation group of RCI, which will be relocating to this complex, has been involved in the design & development of highly critical inertial sensors like Ring Laser Gyroscopes (RLGs), Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs), Quartz Accelerometers, Hemispherical Resonating gyros (HRGs), etc which go into the Navigation systems of missiles, combat aircrafts, torpedoes, ships & submarines. The Real-time Embedded computing Group of RCI has been developing the real-time computer systems for all DRDO products and is an expert group in state-of-art VLSI & System-on-Chip (SoC) technologies. The DRDO scientists confirm that this new advanced Navigation complex is on par with the best in the world and possesses all relevant infrastructures required for the system development and performance evaluation of the present & future Navigation requirements. Dr. Kalam, the founder of RCI, also inaugurated the museum within the complex, which showcases the birth and evolution of the navigation & computing technologies of the world & DRDO, from ancient times to the present day. Dr. Kalam, during his address, expressed that his dream of RCI heading towards the Number 1 position in the field of Inertial sensors, Navigation systems & algorithms, etc is becoming a reality and emphasized the need to develop the Single chip Navigation, Guidance & control solution based on the System-on-chip technology.
