Does India need such small tactical nukes at all? They cause very limited damage but cost too much and waste plutonium which could have been used for bigger bombs causing more damage. Considering that only 5 kg plutonium is obtained from reacting 1 ton of natural uranium, plutonium is too precious to be wasted in artillery. These artillery nukes were good when missiles were inaccurate till 1970

These destroy and pollute the environment and earth around effecting human survival or effectiveness. So in spite of a tank the effect on humans are likely to be there - what is a tank without an effective and efficient soldier.

TNW were developed for Limited Wars under nuclear condition where a theory of Flexible Response was developed. Flexible response meant that there were options to use nuclear weapons less than for total destruction. TNW have more of value as a signalling / massage weapons along the "Escalation Ladder" wherein adversaries are supposed to control escalation in conventional war through signaling the yield of TNW used.

Nuclear artillery shells are supposed to be lowest in that ladder.

These technologies developed for the same included

1.Explosively Formed Projectile (EFP)—A copper liner serving as antenna for the sensor in the search mode and forming a single projectile in the attack mode.

2.Detonator Arming Safety Device for activating EFP warhead

3.Efficient capsule ejection system

4.Highly compact MMW sensor

5.Rotatoil parachute for stabilising the sub-munition and scanning the ground target

The technology was validated for 120 mm mortar rounds.

Later it was incorporated in Pinaka rockets.
