It's about budget. Netra type will be cheaper to procure and operate while providing 240° coverage.

Rotodome will provide 360° on a bigger platform more range more coverage more power but will be costly to operate and procure .
The primary grouse of the IAF with the Netra apart from the coverage area is the endurance of the platform . Hence it's not going to prove economical to operate as opposed to the Netra - 2 on the Airbus platform.

In all probability we'd use the 3 nos Netra Mk1 & upcoming Mk-1a on our western borders & the upcoming Netra -2 along with the existing PHALCON / A-300 platforms on our northern borders.

Defination of Incompetence

Total period of 5 years

They always feel things as a matter of afterthoughts- need of greater range BVR missiles after 2019 post balakot, need for Aesa radar after their pesa ones are jammed during aur combat, need for AEW&C after they fell short of performance during a conflict. Have they heard of a term called resource planning?

Instead of a big old radome at top, can't the Netra Mk3 AAAU be similar in design to the Northrop Grumman's MESA that is mounted on top of the E-7 Wedgetail?

The E-7 Wedgetail's MTOW is about half of the E-3 Sentry.

You forgot AIM-120C5 in PAF's arsenal since 2010 which IAF completely ignored. You forgot PLA were testing Type-15 light weught tanks in Tobet since 2014 but ignored by IA but now they want DRDO to fast track Zorawar just like chicken laying an egg out of no where!

I feel sorry to say except IN, both IAF and IA are far behind in terms of strategies when comlared to PA and PAC forget PLAAF or PLA.

Indian Navy have nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers, great SSKs (though low in numbers) and excellent FFGs and DDGs.

These afsars are on another trip altogether of robotic mules, jetpacks and all.

Sometimes i think is there some conspiracy considering the Navy behaves responsibly while they are the least useful against our current set of enemies, they won't be doing the bulk of their fighting.
Meanwhile the Army and AF which are more likely to be important during wartime is busy clowning and dalaling

Netra mk2 ok airbus platform will be used on northern frontier because it can fly much higher and look deep into tibet/ china. This is where netra mk1 struggles .

The day MoD, DRDO amd IAF will understand AMCA, not Rafale, is the silver bulllet against enemies, India will win next war.

Actually the EMBRAER Emb -145 , the Airbus A-321 & the Russian Beriev A-50 carrying the Israeli PHALCON AWACS system all have a service ceiling of between 11,000-12,000 mtrs.

even C-295 can be used as AWACS platform View attachment 239711
There are many issues with adopting the C-295 as a AEW&C platform.
Endurance, range, operating altitude, power requirements of the 360° radome to name a few.
Embraer C-390 is a better fit for this sort of a role.

However, given the versatility of the C-295 it can be adopted to serve the role of a gunship for CAS, Maritime Patrol Aircraft/Maritime Surveillance Aircraft for IN & ICG, SIGINT.
