Why not just AD-1 and AD-2? Aren't they supposed to be more advanced than Ashwin and PDV?
Y-U-P
We have two ABMs; namely (9) Ashwin {also called AAD and AD-Phase 1-1} and (10) Prithvi {also called PAD and AD-Phase 1-2}. Without completely getting inducted into service these missiles are already getting updated (eventually replaced) by two new missiles; (11) AD-1 {AD-Phase 2-1} which is similar in performance to Aster-30 and (12) AD-2 {AD-Phase 2-2} which is similar to SM-3.
But usually you test the more mature system as a validation of the idea. Later you can very easily upgrade

Naah... they use good ol HE-Frag warhead, just one of the most sophisticated HE-Frag warhead currently in service.

And as for them calling it a dart, it's just 112kg and going extremely fast...AIM-120 for comparison is 150kg and R-77 is 175kg...so ya, they can call it.

In case someone's not that excited about naval ABM test...well they say a picture is worth thousand words...so I've a picture for you all
The only problem is: all of these missiles will fly from north mountains instead of Indian Ocean if there is a war in next 30 years.

If you have American scale of military budget, certainly you can do all the R&D projects to cover every frontier. If not, better concentrate your resources on those most valuable and necessary sectors.

Aster 15 & 30 bk0 using same dart, right ? and dart having speed max mach 3.5. and both aim 120 & r77 having speed max mach 4.5 and what is the range of 112kg dart ??

They can still be effective at protecting coastal cities like Mumbai. Especially from Pakistani ballistic missiles.
Naval ABM is also still very useful for protecting against anti-ship ballistic missiles.

First thing first, the dart of Aster has nothing to do with either range or speed; it's more like a KKV in terms of the concept. You mount the KKV on a smaller ballistic missile you get lower ranger and less speed but when you mount the same KKV on a bigger missile you increase both of these.

In terms of propulsion the dart has only two functions; maintain the speed attained after first stage separation and control the missile using "pif-paf" lateral thrusters.

Now coming to speed, the max quoted speed of Aster is 4.5 Mach and that for AIM-120 is 4 Mach. But in case of AIM-120 the propulsion is a single stage rocket and the 4 Mach speed you get is at the stage burnout so any maneuver (and moreover the maneuver are made using traditional fins, so the missile must turn to change course) you make lowers the energy and in turn speed. But for Aster it's a two stage setup so even after maneuver (and maneuvers are using lateral thrusters, so drag isn't increased substantially) the speed is very much retained.

The range of that simple dart is very low it only depends on the booster you're using; smaller for Aster 15 and larger for Aster 30.
