Do we ? If you are referring to INSAS, then how can you benchmark a production unit against itself ? You need a third-party source of reference.
Nowhere in the world actual guns are used for benchmarking of cartridges coz then you would be having way too many factors...short stroke guns will perform differently than delayed blowback one, same AR-15 from two manufacturers will perform differently. So ultimately it becomes more of a gun's benchmark test rather than a cartridge.

So what all ammunition manufacturers and R&D personnel use all over the world is what's know as a "Mann gun or mann set-up". You've four parts, a target for terminal ballistics. A chronograph for velocity. A pressure probe for offcourse pressure. And perhaps the most interesting; an "universal receiver gun"...

...a single gun that can fire everything from .17 to 14.5mm.

You either (1) use this method to test ammunition or you (2) fire the ammunition form the gun you produced to check for the gun's benchmarks.

Never do you just wake up one morning and randomly select M16A4s from 50s of available rifles all over the world to use it as benchmark. It seems some local distributor has made a good fool out of them by selling surplus US M16s at 2.1lakh.

Good stuff, didn't knew about it !

In that case, I have no idea why OFB would want M16A4s :notsure:

Over 2 lakh per M16 :bplease: better be gold plated

90,000-1.2 lakhs max for a decent rifle (with taxes). How did they come up with this pricetag. I doubt they are out buying gucci exotic crap.
Just imagine the feeling we all here at DFI would have when we find out some dealer convinced them to pay $2.5k for this

Does the VSHORADS require sustainer for such a short duration (15-20s)? The booster will take you till the end and you just have to control the direction.
This is why they are using booster + sustainer arrangement in MANPADs
Remember a gentleman laughing at me on how can an ATGM be used as a SAM?
Guess what; our VSHORADs too is an ATGM.

Time and time ATGMs have shown their capability to engage low flying targets, perhaps the most famous being Stugnas downing Alligators in Ukraine. There also have been cases where ATGMs have been modified to act as MANPADs; the most interesting being that of Iranian Qaem-M where they added a proximity fuze to a TOW copy.

But as of now there have been no (obviously there maybe some that I'm unaware of) MANPAD to be developed from an ATGM.

- rear folding control fin; same as Nag/HELINA/Dhruvastra/SANT
- mid-body sustainer motor with four Venturi type nozzles; same as Nag
- mid-body folding stabilization fins; again same as Nag/HELI...
- warhead is obviously different; most probably a pre-fragmented type
- perhaps the most interesting feature that everyone's noticing is uncooled seeker. But no-one asked why this when every other MANPAD uses cartridge type cooled seeker. The answer is; NAG family also uses the same uncooled IIR seeker.
Perhaps because of this sustainer type motor the max speed is slowest among all other MANPADs

Can this testbed be used to replicated x round burst mode, auto etc?

Those are parameters of a gun, not a round.

You always find out the rate of fire or RPM of a gun not the rate of fire of a cartridge. An assault rifle will have RPM of 700 and for the same round a minigun will have 5000
Agreed, but we do want to know how the performance is with different magazines/feeds with different settings don't we. For that, do we use a different testbed?

Agreed; and in that case you need 10s of different types of guns, AR-15 have different feed lug than SCARs, BRENs have different feed lug than Galil. Now coming to magazine you need 10s of different types of STANAG magazines from different manufacturers, then you need wildcard ones like AK, Galil, Bren, G36.

This case of buying M16A4s and that too 40 can only be justified if OFB is supplying ammo to an army whose standard issue rifle is M16
