Poor serviceability is a major concern
Along with no upgrade from Russia and after war this is impossible
C-17 is literally backbone of our heavy transport fleet
The kc-135 c-5 have been gi en necessary upgrades
Importantly transport aircraft should provide service more than fighter aircrafts with necessary upgrades
U can see the serviceability of it in the post above
In Google articles are written regarding the issues bcoz no upgrade and do u think we can do such an extensive upgrades such engine and mordern electronics that too at higher cost and especially after war
The number of C-17 Globemasters in IAF's fleet are simply not enough, the initial few airframes of the IL-76MD fleet are already 40 years old and will require upgrades or replacement pretty soon.
Currently, in the strategic airlift category, there is no other aircraft which can haul 48-60tons of cargo, so, going forward, IAF has no other option but to upgrade its IL-76MD fleet to IL-76MD-90A standards or procure new IL-76MD-90A aircraft.

Regarding il-78 refuellers

U can say these reports are of 2017 so it's old blah blah
But no change has been observed atleast by any osints or news reporter wrt il-76
Only option upgrade but even that doesn't give surety as its and Russian upgrade
Defence Journalism in India is straight up untrustworthy.
The first article states that IAF IL-76 aren't allowed to fly in international air corridors due to vintage avionics, but how the heck did these aircraft take part in the rescue of Indians from Ukraine??

C-17 blunder by our iaf and mod is well known
After 10 years they will have only 11 heavy lift aircrafts and nothing can be done except crying bcoz no one is producing 70 ton transport aircraft except China
Coming to il-76 upgrade its literally impossible after this war even before war we weren't upgrading it as we know even upgrade won't be able to improve its serviceability comparing to money which we will pay
I won't be surprised if mod goes to China for y-20 import as USA won't be giving their existing fleet of c-17

This is the only solution that's even remotely feasible for heavy lift problem

Yes there are many c-17 which are bitting dust in their famous scrap yard
If I am not wrong plus they have many in service but I don't think they will hive from that fleet as they have huge requirement
But will they provide us if yes why haven't we asked them until now or waiting for il-76 to retire

IIRC, these are C-5 Galaxy not the C-17.

USAF itself is quoting they have less C-17 in their fleet ( which is around 220+) and they want more transport aircrafts. There were some reports that either they will ask Boeing to restart the production or find other alternatives like using KC-46 and converting it into C-46 to meet their demand or develop a totally new aircraft from scratch.

One more lost opportunity is the An-188. It would have been a direct competitor to the A-400M and having payload capacity of around 40 tons.

Heh watch IAF order the Il-106 PAK VTA in 20 years as replacement for the Il-76

well the VTA has to actually exist and fly first but long games are our specialty

So as I thought I was mistaken usaf doesn't kept any c-17 in scrapyard
Anyway if we see from far atlest by pics c-5 looks similar to c-17
But a lot of difference exists wrt size and design

It will be awesome if they start producing c-17 again

PAK-VTA will be very different from the 1990s project IL-106. The older IL-106 was something similar to C-17 but the newer one will be far larger and much more capable. It will be even larger than the An-124 and C-5 Galaxy. IMO, IAF doesn't have requirement for such large strategic airlifter.

C-5 Galaxy are like an economic disaster. They are very hard and costly to maintain even for the USAF which has a fleet of ~50 aircrafts. They recently modernized them into C-5M Super Galaxy and plan to operate it till 2040s.

It's a very simple question; we lack absolutely zero foresight.

We could have simply bought Embraer when they're at their lowest. Period

All these shenanigans of Saras and RTA and MTA would have been solved in months.
We are going to have the same problem with Su30s we have with Mig21s (unless we are doing away with heavy fighters). This is not going to end any time soon.

There are no replacements for su30 as of now ORCA was a good idea but it's in the bin as of now.
