Yes but in order to remedy that IAF bought R-77-1 from Russia on an emergency basis. The 1 variant has a 110 km range .

Spyder using 50km/15~20km vl derby only, and both need their missiles & spyder requirement comes first.

Why would we need Derby I ER when we have the 80-110 km Astra mk1 and mk2 and mk3 are waiting on the wings to be inducted within the next few years?

The original Derby has a 55 km range while the I ER has a 100+ km range .

maybe becz Derby I ER used by mk1, mk1a [123] & better than both astra & r77 now, and Astra mk1a and mk2 and mk3 still in development stage, once available, it replace other.

123- done deal, 99 ge 414 engine which powers mk2 under delivery with some with local[hal] manufacturing means at least 90 mk2 are coming[almost done deal].

99 ge 414 on order, under delivery, and <if you consider 18 jets per sqn, then only 5 sqn, rest for testing. but now 6, +1, means more than 6, 5 sqn is only a start, then 6, and number goes up and depend on amca mk2, mrfa><my theory>
Once IAF starts getting mk1a with uttam , then they say, mk2 - 8~10 sqn.

I think the message is more like that whatever the forces try to get their foreign maal, GOI is more than willing to shove down indian weapons down their throats.

I-Derby ER is a reality why Astra Mk. 1 is still in testing phase. Astra Mk. 2 and Astra Mk. 3 are still on drawing board as far IAF is concerned.
Astra Mk. 1 has only been integrated on MKI and the missile is still not available in large numbers.
The missile has proven seeker with good ECM/ECCM capabilities.
The missile has proven bidirectional data-link.
