By buying m777, congress removed a curse from IA, a curse brought by congress in first place.
Also able achieve 3 goals with one deal and every ones happy.
No further order due to rise in price and now more options are available. I don't know current production status.

Ugly? That's ECS Chamber - Environmental Control System. Absolutely vital for air supply, CO2 removal, temperature control and cabin pressurization for the crew and passengers. Additional functions like cooling of avionics, smoke detection, and fire suppression are also present in modern ECS. Better the ECS, the more comfortable the journey is, for longer distances and at higher altitudes.

Also, the rear landing gears at the extreme ends of that ECS Pod gives Saras Mk. 2 better take off and landing stability even during strong winds or bad runways.

Nitpick but the M777 deal was signed by NDA 2.0 in Nov-16.

The delay due to cost issue. M777 chosen by upa, and concluded by NDA. All major weapons purchase from USA concluded by nda were intilised/started by upa which also include military agreements. Also, when upa came to power, usa was India's no.1 enemy/threat and when they left office, usa is one of India's best friend.
Now if your question is why m777 not indigenous one, then its battle tested, can fire extended range sheel, smart and guided shell, and certified to deploy from chinook. with short notice, chinook can deploy m777 on critical positions on mountains. 145 nos is ok, rest indigenous ones.
Since Bofors scandal, IA stuck with outdated and rusty artillery, and no one interested in talking about artillery guns and only good thing is pinaka mbrl. its like a blind getting vision for IA, not a nitpick for IA, who fought kargil war. For you/us bofors scandal is like a small corruption and don't give any importance, but for IA its a curse, a curse that can lead to loose a war.

The United States has finalised a proposal to sell M777 ultra-light howitzers, a towed 155 mm artillery piece, to India under a direct government-to-government deal, with Washington expected to send a formal ‘Letter of Acceptance’ this week.

According to Indian media reports, the ‘Letter of Acceptance’, which is the final step from the US in a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract like this, has been finalised and is to be presented to South Block this week. This would be followed by an acceptance from the Indian side and subsequently transfer of an advance after which deliveries of 145 guns would commence.

At least two M777 light howitzers are expected to be delivered to India this year as part of the deal so that the army can generate its ‘range tables’ – a calibration for the various types of Indian made ammunition that the guns would fire once in service.

The deal for M777 howitzers under the FMS route has been in process since 2008 and has seen several ups and downs, including the possibility of being scrapped. The contract was revived last year by the Modi government under a new deal that included a Make in India component.

The light artillery gun deal, worth over $700 million, will also involve a significant ‘Make in India’ component with Mahindra expected to bag a major share of the work contract.

Saras Mk. 2 will do what HAL Dhruv cannot accomplish. Will also come with many counter measures against missile threats. A single propeller getting damaged can still keep the passengers safe.
