The Advanced Assault Rifle (AAR) , previously known as MCIWS, is going to be inducted into Indian Armed Forces within just 6-10 months if any further problem doesn't arise. All modifications, suggested and demanded by army, have been done. All trials have been conducted successfully.
If this is true then why wait for 6-10 months ,doesn't make any sense.I am still skeptical of this being our standard issue rifle ,let's wait , only time will tell.

I do understand the purpose behind the hand guard design, but still wish they trim it down .It's too fat ,plus the tiny rail for fore-grip doesn't make any sense.A slim hand guard design with full length rail up and down would have been better IMHO,just like insas 1c.

MCIWS Update:

The Advanced Assault Rifle (AAR) , previously known as MCIWS, is going to be inducted into Indian Armed Forces within just 6-10 months if any further problem doesn't arise. All modifications, suggested and demanded by army, have been done. All trials have been conducted successfully. The new model has reduced the weight further, means AAR is lighter than early MCIWS. It can accept 5.56, 6.8 and 7.62 mm ammo, giving an edge. More than 250 models have been evaluated and more than 25000 rounds have been fired still now.

I had hoped that these ppl would have done some justice to the paintwork before putting it on display. The foldable butt att is a pure display of bloody babugiri with NO design effort being put by the designers whatsoever.

Dont know when these people would have a sincere look on the aesthetics of the AR.

I don't know why semi collapsible butt like M4 was replaced by ugly folding butt. Anyway, it seems that aluminium receivers are back in fashion as they are more rugged, durable, light, dissipate heat better compared to plastic

This thread has gone cold. Any updates, anyone? With the new combat helmets and BPJs coming in for the army its only natural to think that a new assault rifle will be on the way too.

I think foreign weapons would be better handled and understand by foreign Generals. We need to outsource them.

I think collapsible are better as they could be adopted to person's comfort.

MCIWS Is based on HK-416 which is at present the world most successful design, adopted by USA & France also. While the foreign rifles/carbines on order are a piece of crap. Coupling the requirement for weapon sights with Carbine in 200,000 CQB RFP/Tender is mischievous, primarily to help Israelis. Also RFP/Tender conditions have deleted requirement to fire Indian Round which led to failure of INSAS carbine for 35 years, as it was physically impossible but then why not INSAS or MCIWS carbine? HTT-40 and Pilates redux? Adding sights, means tender value will go up to Rs. 5,000 crores...... No, I don't think MCIWS has a chance.

If the business is of that magnitude (amount) a lot of % is at stakes....therefore indigenous product has no chance until and unless someone from MOD stepped in like what Parrikar had rammed LCA down IAF throat.

MCIWS looks more like Indian version of bushmaster ACR.

Eversince IA has scrapped/cancelled its unrealistic requirement of multicalibar rifle ARDE continues to develop MCIWS as AAR. This concept is too futuristic; until and unless it's fully matured IA has selected new OFB 7.62 Nato rifle for user trial. Therefore this new rifle will be replacing INSAS 1b.

A bullet in the head is a bullet no matter what size it is. Most of the fallen soldiers in WW2 were stengundowned.
The problem with that is that not all bullets go to the head. Head is a difficult target

Stopping power of a LMG doesn't depend on the firepower of the round it fires but rather on the sustain rate of fire it has. The primary object of a LMG is to pin down the enemy from marching forward. The thing is that neither 5.56 mm nor 7.62 mm ball ammunition can penetrate ceramic armour at any combat distances nor could any hypothetical round that didn't use heavy metal.
Indian army also use Bren LMG which uses 7.62 nato round.

In many cases, LMG is just modified assault rifle. Why not just use older assault rifles and convert them to LMG? Saves unnecessary manufacturing needs

In that case why don't you convert all the old 303 rifles to LMG in your kitchen Cum workshop? That will save unnecessary f**k**g manufacturing needs.

A sustained fire automatic weapon needs some specific characteristics like
  • Heavy barrel or active/passive cooling for heat management
  • Open bolt repeating mechanism to increase airflow and prevent cook off
  • Optional belt feed for larger ammo capacity before reloads
The definition of LMG depends upon infantry doctrine of the nation state. WW2 era BAR and BRENs used by Americans and British were mostly designed as automatic rifles to boost firepower of bolt action or semi automatic rifles equipped infantry sections. German tactic revolved around the machine gun as the centerpiece and the MG34/MG42 were designed based on that line of thought. After WW2 Soviets were using belt fed RPD as their squad automatic weapon, but then decided to go with RPK when the AK74 was introduced, which is basically a AK with heavier barrel, larger magazine, different buttstock, then the PK mg became popular in Afghanistan. In modern times NATO and US infantry squads use belt fed reduced weight MMG derivatives like the Minimi and MG4.
Ultimately it depends on the balances and compromises of features required by specific doctrines.

Back in 1915 somebody actually tried something like this.
