DRDO planning to doubling the range of MRSAM.


After its Developmental Partner, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) showcased Barak-8ER (Extended-Range) surface to air missile system with a range of 150 km which is extended variant of the Medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) named in Indian Air Force (IAF) and offered it to India, DRDO its Indian partner has decided to develop a local version of it with inhouse technologies instead of relying on the IAI.

DRDO has planned to test MRSAM missile system with an additional rocket booster which could have doubled its range from its current 70-80km to 140-150 km for the Air Force version which also requires minor changes to the mobile launch canister design and tweaking to the phased-array radars, command, and control system of the missile.

DRDO is also working on Surface to Air Missile which it calls as XRSAM and has a range of 250km and is designed to work with MRSAM-ER for the Air force along with MRSAM (70km). Official Renders of the XRSAM confirms that it has taken design cues from the IAI-DRDO developed MRSAM air defense system and probably will be using the same enhanced missile frame of the MRSAM missile and electronics like Active seeker and dual pulse motor which it has developed for the MRSAM program.

XRSAM was also seen with an additional rocket booster which leads to questions if the MRSAM-ER will be called XRSAM and the range will be bumped to 250km instead of 150km as rumored to be. Both Naval, Army, and Air force variants of XRSAM will be developed, XRSAM will have higher local content than the MRSAM which has many Israeli components in it including its Radar and command and control systems. DRDO has confirmed the development of XRSAM but has been mum on development of MRSAM-ER, Sources close to idrw.org have confirmed that one of the MRSAM missile launches was delayed due to lockdown in recent weeks.

We keep reading reports on faulty ammunition including tank shells, OFB made landmines and artillery shells causing even fatal accidents.. The bad work culture at OFB and almost zero quality control are reasons for this.
On the other hand everybody sees the private sector as being the panacea for this problem.
I think we need statistical data to support this premise.
I suggest that a few weapon systems like the Insas rifle, tank and artillery shells, landmines etc should be manufactured at private sector facilities. Big industrial groups like Tatas, L & T, Ashok Leyland etc should produce the weapons or ammunition that are already manufactured by OFB and which are deemed substandard by the armed forces.
Let there be a competitive comparison of the weapons or ammunition produced by both OFB and the private sector.
If after analysis and actual usage by the army the private sector weapons and ammunition are significantly better than the OFB then I believe all the OFB's should either be privatised/corporatised or simply shut down if they cannot be saved.
The results of the study should be widely disseminated amongst the public to drum up support.
Why should the armed forces be made to suffer and substandard weapons and ammunition forced on them.
If the government wants to have some control over the private sector arms units they can acquire between 26% to 49% of the equity.
Of course the cost of production and the price at which the army buys the products will also be a factor.

If the OFB is doing a disservice to the armed forces by its inefficiency then somebody needs to bell the cat.

On the other hand if the OFB products turn out to be better than the private sector and are still faulty God help us.

DRDO ELINT / COMINT payloads for UAVs. This is light weight , smaller in size. It operates over a wide range of frequencies with complete 360 Degree coverage. This system can provide accurate info about the hostile Radar so can aid in Electronic Order of Battle.

I had posted the pic of this , even before drdo publically acknowledged it's existence

It has 4 cells and the entire launcher container weights 4 tons. The design of the launcher allows for quicker and easier loading of missile canisters.

Each VL-SRSAM round is contained within its own storage/transport canister which also has its own individual integral exhaust management duct.

The loaded canister is loaded onto the 4 launcher cells as seen in the pictures.
