Let's keep people out of the acronyms. We don't want to disrespect anyone even if we don't like them. We want this forum to have an international appeal. Just a humble opinion

i will agree with what yusuf has to say and personally i do not like calling anyone names no matter what. my other concern to this kind of thing here is that this immediately effects the quality of the forum and i am sure if we are into name calling others, this might not go down well with a lot of potential members and so they might resist from joining the forum, will this move hinder in any which way the growth of the forum in a positive manner, if the answer is yes then lets just leave it but if the answer is no then please a request lets not have any derogatory term used to define anyone.

one thing i will like you all to continue with for sure is the expansion of short terms like what satish has done as that helps people like me in better understanding whenever such terms are used.

cheers!!

As far as acronyms are concerned, most of us know the military ones and have the pros to explain the ones we don't understand.

People go crazy inventing these acronyms to be with the Joneses and in the bargain those who are new or even not so new get totally confused.

There must be some control so that it does not become a crazy maze.

i think using acronyms is a bad idea not only because this will deflate the image of the forum but also our international first time visitors will not understand what we are talking about.i mean if i go to a russian(english language) forum and they have an acronym for medvedev, will i understand whom they are talking about?

we should only use acronyms that are universally understood. Acronyms like CAP, CAS etc may not be understood by everyone. So if u are gonna use them, give the full form first, and then use the short form.

Example: Close Air support (CAS) is essential these days. Most air forces have fighters dedicated for the CAS role.

Aside from Acronyms, we should also have a key for short forms. for example:

Pak - Pakistan
Afg - Afghanistan
Ind - India

They seem obvious, but sometimes arent, especially to people new to forums. So again, we have to give use the full form first and then the short term.

Battalion is Bn
Regiment is Regt
Prithvi Air Defence is PAD can be mistaken for Passive Air Defence which is what PAD signifies in military abbreviations.
