Gripen NG One Of The Four Candidates As Denmark Restarts Fighter Process

In accordance with the "Agreement on defense 2013-2017" the Danish Ministry of Defence has decided to restart type selection process for new fighter jets. Furthermore, the Ministry of Defence, in cooperation with the Armed Forces has set up an organization to prepare the presentation for type selection.

"Our position to export Gripen to the world market is stronger than ever, particularly after the historical procurement order placed last month by Sweden for 60 Gripens and another possible 22 Gripen fighters for Switzerland," says Lennart Sindahl, Head of Saab's business area, Aeronautics.

According to the Danish Ministry of Defence, the reopened procurement involves four alternatives: F-18 Super Hornet from Boeing, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter from Lockheed Martin, Gripen Next Generation from Saab and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

"We note a great interest for Gripen worldwide and we follow the decision that has just been announced in Denmark. Now we are looking forward to receiving more information about the process," explains Lennart Sindahl.

Brazil's still a pretty good bet for Rafale. Third-worlders seem to think only the US spies on other governments these days.

As for Denmark, the government there has already prioritized job creation as the deciding factor.

So which competitor is able to dish-out the most bacon? EADS has the best industrial connections across Europe, and Saab gets an up for being local; but Eurofighter and Gripen can't match the JSF's sheer volume (Superhornet is a long-shot IMO). As for Rafale not competing... I'm guessing Dassault figured it wasn't worth the trouble given their position would be little better than Boeing's.

Why does Denmark need to spend so much on Fighters. Whom are they going to attack or defend against??

They are reasonably far away from Russia to be threatened by them.

What do you exactly mean by JSF's sheer volume ? It has not even reached FOC. Could you please elaborate ?

What similarity in position between Boeing & Dassault ?

Competition between 4th, 4+, & 5th gen fighter. What's the logic?

Number of airframes likely to be built and the time that work will last. Denmark's "jobs requirement" biases the competition somewhat in the F-35's favor since LM can offer participation in a larger program than the others. On the other hand, JSF is also structured to allow open bidding amongst the contractors of partner nations, so there's no way to guarantee preferential treatment like a conventional offset agreement.

What similarity in position between Boeing & Dassault ?
Technically, Denmark is still a JSF member and is already participating industrially in the program. It also stands to reason that EADS and Saab have some connections as well; but Boeing and Dassault appear to be outsiders there.

Were they not invited, or did they just decide to opt out?
I wonder if the French are close to the country. Or whether they think this deal will be on the same lines as Korea. A definite loss.

They are reasonably far away from Russia to be threatened by them.
All NATO members are expected to participate when a war happens, especially if someone invades Europe. SU was the threat, now they will merely build a smaller air force as that threat is gone.

Who knows, the way the Russians are progressing, they may end up being a bigger threat than SU ever was. Their economy surpassed ours which means we are tailing behind the BRICs nations. While it may not be sustainable, they may become the largest European economy at this rate.

Retaining experience and high tech jobs is important too. Even Switzerland has a requirement for an air force, Denmark will definitely have one as well.

There are no 4th gen aircraft, all 4.5th gen.

Last ditch attempt by 4.5th gen waalas to enter some markets before it closes for good in a decade. They don't get sales in the next few years, it is goodbye for all of them.

This is F-35's victory. Same for Canada and Korea.

No Russians ? Due to NATO bindings/clauses ?
Russia doesn't participate in a definite loss deal. Besides, the Danish will have a requirement to have some capability against PAKFA. So why will they go for a Su-35, a definite inferior jet?

It was the same with Rafale in Korea. Dassault is convinced that the Koreans will rig their contest for the F-35. Proof is in the pudding, they cancelled their MRCA deal because the F-35 did not make the cut.

I wouldn't assume for any of those three places until money changes hands for actual airframes.
Korean seems to be guaranteed. Looks like they junked the tender and will be going for a FMS buy of the F-35.

We thought Canada and Denmark were guaranteed a few years back. Hell... the Dutch weren't even a lock until recently, despite having already bought two planes.

They will make a lot of noise and still buy F-35.
