Barely seven months after the Mumbai attacks, Indian efforts in the United Nations to place sanctions on Jaish-e-Mohammad founder Maulana Masood Azhar have received a major setback. In a surprise move, the United Kingdom has joined hands with China to block the Indian request to proscribe both Azhar and Azam Cheema, the Lashkar-e-Toiba operative accused in the Mumbai train blasts, under the UN?s ?Al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions? resolution (1267).

India had wanted these two along with Abdul Rehman Makki, another LeT ideologue, to be included in the list just like the Jamaat-ud-Dawa and its head Hafiz Mohammed Saeed were added along with other LeT operatives after the Mumbai attacks. The banning under UN resolution 1267 means freezing of assets, travel ban and embargo on arms.

What has stunned India is the UK?s position because the Jaish as an outfit is already banned by the UN and so it is only logical for Azhar to be put on that list. It?s learnt that London has asked for ?fresh evidence? and ?more details? while placing the request on a procedural hold. China has taken a similar position.

China, it may be recalled, had also placed a similar hold on the banning of Jamaat-ud-Dawa and its head Hafiz Saeed along with Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi last year even after the US placed the outfit and the individuals under its sanctions list. Beijing?s argument was that it could not be conclusively proven that JuD was a front organisation of the

Lashkar that had already been banned. But under immense US pressure after the Mumbai attacks, China removed the hold which led to banning of the outfit.

I raised my hand because even if India were to have a permanent seat it would not have stopped the above.

Like I said, the UNSC is a farce. Any move by one member country is blocked by another. After that, nothing can be done.

It's like a big roadblock for the future. My hands are raised.

Had we been in the council we wouldn't have been subjected to this embarrassment in the first place.Imagine US being asked to furnish more evidence against laden.

There is no doubt the whole exercise of banning him or organization in the UN is a total farce and has no empirical value whatsoever, as far as India is concerned.

UK has a large pakistani population and they are doing everything to keep them happy, they are scaird of any backlash that may happen if they are percevied as going against pakistan even for their terrorism, this maybe a storm term solution. India has to stop relying on UN for solutions as they have never solved anything.

We are the largest contributors of UN peacekeeping troops, aren't we???

And, UK Government is looking for trade deals with India, isn't she???

These maybe suggestive, but I think its time we start flexing our muscles... we've been goody-goody for too long and its starting to become a farce lately... :d_training::d_training::d_training:

Our politicians think of other countries rather than our own interests. I just dont know when we will start thinking like a developed country. First we need to change our mindset from a country which had no voice to a country which can flex its muscles in the International arena.

I agree with Satish here , time has now come to change our mindset, and change our approach.

Is that right?

JuD linked to Al-Qaeda, says Khosa

*LHC presented with secret documents about Hafiz Saeed

News Desk

LAHORE: A full bench of the Lahore High Court adjourned until Monday the proceedings in a habeas corpus petition challenging the detention of Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and Col (retd) Nazir Ahmad.

During the proceedings on Saturday, the attorney general of Pakistan and the advocate general of the Punjab concluded their arguments.

The federal and provincial governments presented secret documents about Hafiz Mohammad Saeed before the court.

Attorney General Sardar Latif Khosa during the proceedings said the documents were related to national security and, therefore, he had presented them in closed session of the court.

According to judicial sources, the court is mulling over the documents.

JuD leader’s counsel AK Dogar said these documents should be presented in an open session of the court in the presence of Hafiz Saeed.

Latif Khosa said the JuD was linked to al-Qaeda, adding one culprit involved in the Mumbai attacks was said to have links with the JuD.

He said even the government was bound to follow the UN resolutions on the matter and other than the UN decision, the government had enough material which could not be produced in an open court but could be produced during in-camera proceedings. He said Hafiz Saeed’s party was accused of being involved in the Mumbai attacks.

The bench inquired from him as to why India had not followed the UN resolutions on the Kashmir issue.

The attorney general replied that this was up to India and he had no authority to comment on it. He also said that the action against the JD was taken as part of a campaign against terrorism.

AK Dogar, the counsel for the petitioner, opposed this idea, saying the matter was related to the liberty of two citizens and without informing them about the material made basis for their detention, there was no justification to confine them to their residences.

He said by this resolution, the UN had challenged the sovereignty of Pakistan and the government should not obey it.

Appeasing a section of the UK electorate cannot be a good enough reason,if that were the case ethnic Indians definitely comprise a significantly larger and more influential section of the UK electorate(bigger than Pakistanis)

There is something amiss in the episode.we have to wait for more information(as if any of this would really matter)

Now what? The government is going to write them an angry letter telling how stunned and disappointed we are?

Please UN, do something for us while our own government was busy ...... US's instead of attacking Pakistan after recent attacks. Talk about being helpless, no ...... Indians are attacked everywhere. World knows that even government can't do anything on its own, needs advice and support from other parties to do anything in our own region.

Is this how the court system works in Pakistan? I really have no hope now. Whether or not, and why India has or has not followed the UN resolutions is irrelevant to the detention of Hafiz Saeed. He was detained because of the UN resolutions and because he heads a group which was a front for the LeT, and was formerly the head of LeT itself.

If a bench of judges can so blatantly seek to politicise a case, then what sort of neutrality can we expect from them? It seems that not only the common Pakistanis, but even judges have been so thoroughly indoctrinated about Pakistan's national cause (that of Kashmir), that all their actions, whether personal or professional, are influenced by the issue.
