Defence equipment export slipped in 2009

NEW DELHI - The export of defence equipment slipped last year, Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju informed the Lok Sabha Monday.

In 2007, India exported defence equipment, including arms and ammunitions, aircraft components and services, communication equipment, radars, night vision and harbour tugs worth Rs.187.43 crore. This went up to Rs.385.41 crore in 2008 and slipped to Rs.171.63 crore in 2009.

"Proposals for purchase have been received and also executed from time to time from USA, Russia, Israel, Italy, UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, Switzerland, Kenya, Oman, Turkey, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium Nepal, Chile, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Botswana, Uganda, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador, Mauritius, Namibia, Romania, Algeria, Thailand, Syria, UAE and Vietnam," Raju said in a written reply.

"The decision is taken by the government on a case to case basis taking into account all relevant factors and in consultation with ministry of external affairs (MEA)," he added.

Defence import at over Rs 25,000 cr

India has imported defence items worth over Rs 25,765 crore in the last three years whereas its export in the sector was worth Rs 740 crore only.

"Total expenditure on import of equipment in last three years in Rs 25,765.92 crores," Defence Minister A K Antony said in reply to a query in Lok Sabha.

Major countries from which the imports are made include Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Israel.

India depends on foreign suppliers for more than 70 per cent of its defence needs and is taking a number of steps to evolve an indigenous defence industry to move towards self-reliance.

In a written reply to a query on Indian defence exports, Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said that defence equipment worth Rs 744.47 crore were exported during the last three years.

170 crore? What a fvckin' pittance!

Some sources tell me all they managed to export were a few measly radar, harbour equipment, military aircraft components and night vision devices, apart from the usual small arms/ammunition.

Is there even a strategy to consolidate our presence in the defence export market in place?
