Major Vinod Kumar Rana (37 RR) - Op Parakram

The major was heading a company on patrol as part of the counter-insurgency operations. On detecting some suspicious movements, the area was cordoned off and the major himself led the search party. Cornered, the militants opened fire which were immediately retaliated by Major Vinod, killing one militant. He was, however, wounded in the fierce firefight and later succumbed to injuries.

Captain Sajjan Singh (10 Para SF ) - Op Rakshak

Captain Sajjan Singh of the 10 Para (Special Forces) laid down his life on Friday after single-handedly tracking and gunning down three terrorists in Gundpur district, Baramulla. Bleeding from bullet injuries, Singh refused to be taken to hospital until the operation was wrapped up.

Singh had led several operations since he was commissioned into the elite unit in 2001. He had been maintaining a close watch on the terrorist group for several days before going after it on Wednesday. He tracked their movements until he got "actionable intelligence'' on their trail through the forests. On Wednesday night, Singh started after them himself, following their way through the forests surrounding Gundpur village.

Once he drew near, he contacted his men and led them into the village, chasing the terrorists through the bylanes. The terrorists scattered and opened fire, leaving Singh open to attack from all directions. Singh returned the fire, killing two terrorists. Throwing grenades at the fleeing terrorists, Singh got after one of them and gunned him down at close quarters. By then, he was bleeding from bullet injuries but refused to be evacuated until the operation was over. Within minutes, he died at the site of the encounter.

Colleagues recall Singh as a "motivated and daredevil youngster'' who was inducted into 10 Para (Special Forces), known as the Desert Scorpions, at the peak of Operation Parakram. In February, Singh was part of an operation where he gunned down two terrorists.

Coming from a Rajasthani family where serving in the Army is a tradition, Singh chose the Special Forces over the Jat Regiment, where his father retired as Honorary Captain. His mortal remains were flown from Srinagar on Friday morning and taken to Churu district in Rajasthan.

Major Sandeep Shankla (18 Dogra) - Op Rakshak

An IMA pass out of 1986 batch, Major Shankla was posthumously awarded with Ashok Chakra after he laid down his life during the antiinsurgency operations in Zafarkhani village of Kupwara area in Srinagar on August 8, 1991. ''We never expected to lose him- he was the unbeatable one- we have no words to explain his bravery and the presence of mind,'' said Brig R K Sharma, who was second in command of his regiment and the one who supervised the operations carried out in Zafarkhani. ''His martyrdom was only confirmed when we saw his body.''

Even as he was seriously wounded by a splinter from AK 56 of a terrorist, Shanky threw back one of the two grenades hurled on him and rescued his colleague, who had sustained injuries during the crossfire,'' said Sharma, recalling how he fought the insurgents while leading the Quick Reaction Team tasked to clear the Zaffarkhani village of militants.

''He was so fond of chocolates that I had to go around the whole Kupwara area to get some for him when I met him a couple of weeks before he attained martyrdom,'' said Major General Mohunty, who commanded the brigade at that time. He said the Major could do a back flip twice if any one showed him just a small piece of chocolate.

Major Mohit Sharma 1 Para SF

C-59066N Major Mohit Sharma, SM was leading Bravo Assault Team in operations in Kupwara District of North Kashmir. A valiant warrior, he excelled in the art of fighting guerrillas in jungle terrain having earlier spent four years in Jammu & Kashmir.

On 21 March 2009, after receiving information of presence of some infiltrating terrorists in dense Haphruda Forest, he planned meticulously and led his commandos in tracking them. On observing suspicious movement, he alerted his scouts but terrorists fired from three directions indiscriminately. In the heavy exchange of fire, four commandos were wounded immediately. With complete disregard to his safety, he crawled and recovered two soldiers to safety. Unmindful of the overwhelming fire, he threw grenades and killed two terrorists but was shot in the chest. In the brief respite that followed, he kept directing his commandos, inspite of serious injuries. Sensing further danger to his comrades, he charged in a daring close quarter combat killing two more terrorists and attained martyrdom fighting for his motherland in the finest traditions of Indian Army.

For this act of conspicuous gallantry, inspiring leadership and exceptional courage far beyond call of duty, Major Mohit Sharma, SM was awarded 'Ashok Chakra' (Posthumous) on 15 Aug 09.

[h=6]Maj Shaitan Singh, PVC on his 49th Anniversay.[/h]

[h=6]Major Shaitan Singh, son of Lieutenant Colonel Hem Singhji, was commissioned in the Kumaon Regiment on 01 August 1949. During the 1962 Indo-China conflict, 13 Kumaon was deployed in Chushul sector. The C Coy of the battalion led by Major Shaitan Singh held a crucial position at Rezang La, at a height of 5000 metres. The company area... was defended by five platoon positions and the surrounding terrain isolated it from the rest of the battalion. The expected Chinese attack on Rezang La came on November 18th in the morning. It was the end of a very cold winter night. The icy winds howling through Rezang La were biting and benumbing. In the dim light of the morning, the Chinese were seen advancing through nullahs to attack No.7 and No.8 platoon positions.

The Indian troops fell on their prepared positions to face the enemy offensive. At 0500 hours when the visibility improved both platoons opened up on the advancing enemy with rifles, light machine guns, grenades and mortars. The nullahs were littered with dead bodies. The survivors took position behind boulders and the dead bodies. The enemy was not, however, discouraged. They subjected Indian positions to intense artillery & mortar fire at about 0540 hours. Soon about 350 Chinese troops commenced advance through the nullahs. This time, No.9 Platoon, which held fire till the enemy was within 90 metres opened up with all weapons in their possesion. Within minutes, the nullahs were again full of dead bodies.

Unsucessful in frontal attack, the enemy, approximately 400 strong, then attacked from the rear of the company position. They simultaneously opened intense MMG (medium machine gun) fire on the No.8 Platoon. This attack was contained at the barbed wire fencing of the post. The enemy then resorted to heavy artillery and mortar shelling. An assault group of 120 Chinese also charged the No.7 Platoon position from the rear. However, Indian 3-inch mortar killed many of them. When 20 survivors charged the post, about a dozen Kumaonis rushed out of their trenches to engage them in a hand-to-hand combat. Meanwhile, the enemy brought up fresh reinforcements. The encirclement of the No.7 Platoon was now complete. The platoon, however, fought valiantly till there was no survivor. No.8 Platoon also fought bravely to the last man and last round.

Major Shaitan Singh, the Coy Commander, displayed exemplary leadership and courage in the battle of Rezang La. He led his troops most admirably. Unmindful of his personal safety he moved from one platoon post to another and encouraged his men to fight. While moving among the posts he was seriously wounded. But he continued to fight along with his men. While he was being evacuated by two of his comrades, the Chinese brought heavy machine gun fire on them. Major Shaitan Singh sensed danger to their lives and ordered them to leave him. They placed him behind a boulder on the slopes of a hill, where he breathed his last. In this action, 109 Kumaonis out of a total of 123 were killed. The Chinese suffered many more in killed. After the war was over, the body of Major Shaitan Singh was found at the same place. It was flown to Jodhpur and cremated with full military honours. Major Shaitan Singh was awarded Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry medal, posthumously, for his leadership and devotion to duty.

Rest In Peace..

2nd Lt. Puneet Nath Datt-Gorkha Rifles

The operation started in wee hours of 20 July 1997 and the building was completely surrounded by 0400 hours. The militants were secure within the three storied building located in a thickly populated and congested area. At daybreak when the terrorists found that they were surrounded, instead of surrendering to the Indian Army, they resorted to indiscriminate firing. Utmost restraint had to be exercised while trying to liquidate the onslaught so as to avoid any damage to innocent civilian life and property in the vicinity of the building. One militant visualizing the hopeless situation ran out firing on the search party. Seeing the militant firing on his troops, he ordered his troops to take cover and with utter disregard to personal safety sprang up and shot the militant in an eye-to-eye encounter. Meanwhile sensing that the militants were trying to escape, he showed exemplary presence of mind & initiative and maneuvered his position to block the rear exit of the building. Displaying indomitable courage and guts, he shot down another militant who was trying to escape. The remaining militants inside the building meanwhile continued firing on our troops and as a result of which he was seriously wounded. But he did not give in and maintained his sustained crusade against foreign mercenaries and taking courage in both hands, lobbed a grenade inside the building, killing the remaining militants and destroying a considerable amount of the enemy's arms & ammunition. Almost single handedly destroying the enemy, our hero attained martyrdom and immortalized himself by carving a niche in the annals of his Regiment and the Indian Army's history. For his bravery and in recognition of the initiative and dare devilry displayed in the pursuit of his mission to eliminate militancy from the face of his motherland, 2nd Lieutenant Puneet Nath Datt was awarded the Ashok Chakra (posthumous), the country's highest gallantry award in peace time on 15 August 1997

MAJOR Sandeep Unnikrishnan NSG commando and others, who sacrificed their life to save the people at the Taj Hotel in mumbai

Mumbai/Bangalore, November 29
Thousands of people today poured into streets to bid a tearful adieu to the bravehearts ATS chief Hemant Karkare and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who sacrificed their lives while taking on the militants in one of the bloodiest terror attacks in the country.

Slogans of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' rent the air as the last journey of Karkare, who was among the 15 Mumbai police personnel killed in the 60-hour siege that began Wednesday night, started from his house in Shivaji Park Central Mumbai this morning.

Police personnel slow marched leading a huge procession with Karkare's picture on a flower-decked vehicle carrying his mortal remains that crawled through the Mumbai streets to reach Dadar crematorium where last rites were performed with state honours. His only son accompanied the body.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, his cabinet collegaues, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, BJP's Nitin Gadkari and others leaders and top officials were also present.

Karkare, a 1982 batch IPS officer, became the head of ATS in January this year following his return to the state cadre after serving seven years in Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Austria. He is survived by his wife Amruta, two daughters Jui and Sayali and son Akash.

In Bangalore, which is mourning the loss of NSG Major Unnikrishnan during the operations to flush out terrorists at the Taj hotel, the scenes were no different.

The mortal remains of the 31-year-old, wrapped in Tricolour were laid before a framed photograph of the hero and people - friends, leaders, colleagues, family and strangers, filed past with bent heads and folded hands.

Grief stricken family members, friends and others broke down as Unnikrishnan's inconsolable mother sat close to his body caressing her son, repeatedly touching his forehead.

Ordinary people lined up the street, crowded on roofs and balconies and at some places threw flowers at the vehicle carrying Unnikrishnan's body. People were seen stopping their cars and standing out to pay their respects.

Born on March 15, 1977 and the only son of retired ISRO officer K. Unnikrishnan, he had joined the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in 1999.

He joined the NSG on deputation in January 2007 after having served two tenures with his battalion in counter insurgency and counter terrorism roles.

Body of another NSG commando Havaldar Gajendra Singh who was killed during the operations at the Jewish centre, Nariman House was brought to NSG headquarters in Delhi on the way to Dehradun where last rites will be performed.

In the absence of NSG chief who is still in Mumbai overseeing the operations, floral wreaths were place on his behalf as well as home minister, Lt Gen of 10 Para battalion of Army, his parent force.

Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev and M S Bitta also came to offer their tributes to the martyred soldier. The body was later flown to his native village Ganeshpur in Dehradun. — PTI

Bangalore: "Every second of my life, I remember him. He is there with usalways. He was very particular that I dress well. He too presented himself ingrace. He observed the way I dressed and insisted how I should. He gave medirections what saree I must wear. What colour. He had a say in the size andcolour of my bindi. He loved me so much. And, like a small child he alwaysfollowed me whenever he was at home," late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's motherDhanalakshmi spoke in a voice etched in emotion.

Speaking to Express on the eve of the 3rd anniversary of 26/11, Dhanalakshmisaid that she is fulfilling all that 'Sandu Mon' (Sandeep is fondly called athome) wanted. "He has probably left us with a mission to help others. He was avery helpful soul and now he has given me the task of helping others. I amhappy that every day I am living for him," she said.

Sandeep's father K. Unnikrishnan have emerged more stronger over the yearssince he lost his son, but he says his job is far from over. "I am not a man ina hurry. I don't want anyone erecting Sandeep's statue in hismemory. It will gather dust out in the Sun. The best way to remember Sandeep isto help others," said Unnikrishnan.
