Dalai Lama asks China to learn from India

Shillong: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday said China should learn from India the practice of harmonious co-existence of different people, languages and lifestyles.

"They should learn from India, which has apart from different regions, different people, different languages, different scripts and different lifestyles. Yet they all live harmoniously," the Dalai Lama said while addressing the convocation of a state university here.

The spiritual leader, who visited Meghalaya for the first time since he made India his home, termed his adopted country as "wonderful and very nice" to live in.

He likened the country to the United Nations in its embracing a multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-religion society, while blaming Chinese hardliners for infusing hatred against people living in Tibet.

"We are not seeking separation from China. We belong to China with common interests and common economic development," the Dalai Lama emphasised.
Claiming to be a disciple of Gandhi's principle of non-violence, the spiritual leader said he nursed a hope that India's "concept of peaceful living" would make a better Asia and in turn make a better world.

"Over 3,000 years ago, India had the concept of Ahimsa (non-violence). Because of that it commands respect," he said, adding that India was the living example of religious tolerance and culture.

The tens of thousands that have died for an independent Assam would beg to differ.

Assam separatist movements - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

However, several organisations make up the insurgency, including the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), Adivasi National Liberation Army, Karbi Longri N.C. Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). ULFA is perhaps the largest of these groups,[6] and one of the oldest, being founded in 1979.[7] It has also attacked Hindi-speaking migrant workers.[8] There is a movement for secession from the Republic of India.[9] The alleged neglect and economic exploitation by the Indian state are the main reasons behind the growth of this secessionist movement. Both sides - the ULFA and the Indian state are unwilling to compromise on sovereignty and the common people of Assam has been paying the price for it. The United Liberation Front of Asom seeks to establish a sovereign Assam via an armed struggle in the Assam conflict. The Government of India had banned the organization in 1990 and classifies it as a terrorist group, while the US State Department lists it under "Other groups of concern".

ULFA founded at the site of Rang Ghar on April 7, 1979, a historic structure from the Ahom kingdom. Military operations against it by the Indian Army that began in 1990 continues till present.[10] In the past two decades some 30,000 people have died[11] in the clash between the rebels and the government. Though separatist sentiments deems strong,[12] , it is disputed if the secessionist movement enjoys popular support any longer. On the other hand, strong Assamese nationalism can be found in Assamese literature and culture. The neglect and exploitation by the Indian state are common refrains in the Assamese-language media.[13] There are instances when even the ULFA leaders are seen as saviors.[14]

The main lesson that China should draw from India is that sacrificing development and national strength for the sake of ephemeral praise from the West on 'human rights' (and Western tools like His Pederasty) is a recipe for national stagnation and humiliation (as Ms. Khobragade can attest to).

Not quite; Ask the Millions who are very much alive, enjoying life as Indians , if they would prefer to be a part of CCP-China - and you will get the answer you ( might ) deserve .

Referring to HH D Lama in such terms leaves the door wide open to calling your first leader as Eisenhower and others have done:- https://www.google.com/?hl=en#hl=en&q=Eisenhower+referred+to+Mao+as+Mouse+Dung, but as member @t_co, is generally a well-behaved member, i shall refrain from anything further except to quote from google as above .

Has anyone ever polled them? Has there ever been a referendum? Would the GoI ever allow anyone to ask the millions of Assamese who are alive?

You can call Mao whatever you want... I have no special affection for the man, and only certain (very select) portions of his legacy.

Dalai Lama to Return to Tibet Soon: Sangay - The New Indian Express

Tibetan prime minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay Tuesday said Dalai Lama would return to his homeland Tibet soon.

"He (Dalai Lama) will very soon return to Tibet. The universal slogan is we want to see the return of Dalai Lama to Tibet. Given a choice, Tibetans will like to be led by a Tibetan rather than governed by the Chinese," Sangay told journalists.

"That's why I left America; I left my job at Harvard to come to India so that we can all go back to Tibet," he said.

Sangay, who is accompanying the Tibetan spiritual leader on his visit Feb 1-5 to Meghalaya and Assam, also visited Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang and Bomdilla districts to trace the routes of the Dalai Lama and his parents while escaping from Tibet to India.

Sangay added: "Tibetan administration follows the middle-way-policy (meaning between repression and separation), as we want to see an immediate end to the sufferings of the people in Tibet, for which we are willing to compromise in seeking separation from China, if we are given full autonomy in future."

Sangay, who took over political responsibilities from the Dalai Lama in 2011, said the Tibetans are looking forward to the Chinese leadership to resolve the Tibet issue. "Since January 2010, we didn't have any formal dialogue with the Chinese government. We believe in a peaceful dialogue to solve the issue," he said.

"We look forward to the new Chinese leadership. We hope they will also believe wisely that dialogue is the way to solve the issue to Tibet for their own interest as they want respect from the international community and they ought to show respect to the Tibetan people," Sangay said.

"Whatever we are seeking is within the provisions of the Chinese constitution as per article 4 of its constitution, it speaks about the Minority Act, 1984."

Asked about India's role to resolve the vexed Tibet issue, Sangay said: "India has a very important role. The relation goes back centuries, India is our 'guru' and we are India's 'chela'."

"I think China-Tibet issue is one of the core issues, and in that case, Tibet should also be core issue of India, environmentally, spiritually, geo-politically, every reason, so India could play a very constructive role. Having said that, we always remember India has been the most generous country for Tibetan people. The Indian government has been supportive on humanitarian issues as well," he added.

On self-immolations in Tibet, he said: "The universal slogan of those who self-immolate is they want to see the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet and by getting general autonomy, we are fulfilling that and also restoring the freedom and dignity of the people of Tibet."

"Tibetans are frustrated and desperate due to the political repression, economic marginalisation, environmental destruction, social discrimination, cultural assimilation of the hardline Chinese policies towards them (Tibetans)," he said.

Except referenda or groups on independence or joining China are barred, by Indian law; those groups you cite are only allowed to exist because they advocate laying down arms and accepting Indian sovereignty over Assam.

Even the existence of elections there has little relation to the debate, since the choice of independence or joining China is never presented in said elections. Furthermore, the amount of implicit and explicit coercion/cooption to remain in India is enormous. If the IAS, IB, R&AW, et al were removed from NE India for one year, and then the residents polled to see whether they wanted to be independent or not, would Assam vote to stay?

How soon is soon for Sangay? Did he give a definite timeline?

Approx. 72% population of assam voted in the recent vidhan sabha election and you still think they want a separate state?
Assam elections end, over 70 percent voting - ,Assam elections end, over 70 percent voting - 1 - ,1 - -Assembly Elections 2011 |National News|MSN India
The percentage of people voting in Assam is more than the percentage of people voting in Delhi.

Were they presented with a choice of independence in the election?

Unless they were, simply participating in an election does not equate to accepting the sovereignty of the entity delivering the election; if that were the case, you could argue that Iraqis participating in the 2005 elections were accepting US military occupation of their country, when concurrent opinion polls showed an overwhelming majority of them favored getting rid of the US military and their lackeys in Baghdad (regardless of whether those lackeys were 'elected' or not).

Regional equation is changing and Chinese would like to neutralize at least some issues.
That's not an answer. How soon is soon? Did he give a definite timeline? How many years?

First thing tell me a nation that ask her citizens that would they want to join or create a new nation? as for example are you ever asked if you would like to join a xyz nation?

You have a wrong assumption of an assumed conspiracy theory about IB/RAW etc. Why would Indians like to join a China  We have free media here, tell me something considerably taken for granted for an assumption that mainstream people want to join a China or something like that, please do not mention those separatist groups infamous struggles they are unpopular and a few.
