India Beats Australia In Mohali Test By 1 Wicket; Laxman The Messiah
Veteran Indian batsman, VVS Laxman and tailsman, Ishant Sharma gave a spirited fightback partnership of 81 from 130 balls, as India fought back from a critical losing situation to win the first Test match against Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. Once again, Hyderabad man, VVS Laxman dropped the anchor for India and scored unbeaten 73 runs, ably supported by Ishant Sharma who put in 31 runs as a No.10 batsman. Faulty umpiring once again cost India another crucial wicket, when Ishant Sharma was wrongly given an lbw by umpire Ian Gould for 31 runs. Just one wicket and 11 runs left to win, tail-ender Pragyan Ojha walked in, all Indian hopes resting on his burden. Laxman and Ojha held on to their nerves to finish off the day on a winning note for India. In all, it was yet another memorable India vs Australia match that had its ups and downs all through the match, with no one knowing the impending winner until the last ball had been bowled. Nothing short of an exciting Bollywood potboiler that Indians are so fond of!
Set in a victory target of 216 runs, India had lost 4 early wickets yesterday to start Day 5 at 55/4. Wickets kept falling today also as Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh all went back to the pavilion in quick succession to a stage where India was 124/8 when Ishant Sharma walked in and the tables turned round. Putting off a thwarting Aussie attack of Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger, Ishant batted calmly to support the Very Very Special Laxman who once again turned out to be a menace for the Australian pace attack. Laxman braved an aching spine and went on to score a ball and save the day for India.
Brief Scores: 1st Innings: Australia 428/10 (Shane Watson 126, Tim Payne 92, Ricky Ponting 71), India 405/10 (Sachin Tendulkar 98, Suresh Raina 86, Rahul Dravid 77, Virender Sehwag 59), Australia 192/10 (Shane Watson 56), India 216/9(VVS Laxman 73 not out).
